LOS ANGELES — Um homem armado sequestrou um ônibus do metrô e levou a polícia de Los Angeles a uma perseguição selvagem que terminou no centro de Los Angeles na manhã de quarta-feira.
O vídeo do incidente mostrou uma série de pequenas explosões ao redor do ônibus parado perto da Alameda e 6th Streets depois das 2 da manhã, então a polícia invadindo o local com escudos. Um motorista de ônibus é mostrado saindo de uma janela e correndo para a segurança atrás de um veículo blindado enquanto os policiais limpam o resto do veículo.
A perseguição começou perto da South Figueroa Street e da Manchester Avenue, no sul de Los Angeles, por volta de 0h45, disse a policial de Los Angeles Rosario Cervantes.
De acordo com oficiais do Corpo de Bombeiros de Los Angeles, uma pessoa foi levada ao hospital em estado crítico e duas outras pessoas no local foram liberadas. A pessoa levada ao hospital estava sofrendo de ferimentos de bala e morreu, disse Cervantes.
A perseguição começou perto da South Figueroa Street e da Manchester Avenue, no sul de Los Angeles.
O sequestrador foi detido no final da perseguição.
O sequestro é o mais recente de uma série de incidentes violentos que mancharam o sistema de trânsito de Los Angeles. Em maio, a prefeita Karen Bass pediu por segurança reforçada nas linhas de trânsito.
No início deste ano, vários esfaqueamentos e tiroteios em ônibus e trens geraram indignação e demandas por mudanças.
Em abril, Mirna Soza, 66, foi mortalmente esfaqueada no metrô quando voltava para casa do seu trabalho noturno e um passageiro flagrou um motorista de ônibus implorando por ajuda após ser esfaqueado.
