Jogando no paraíso dos rebatedores, mais conhecido como Coors Field, o ataque dos Rockies continua com desempenho abaixo do esperado.
Os Rockies tiveram nove rebatidas, em sua maioria vazias, em uma derrota de 5-2 para os Cardinals na quarta-feira à noite. Eles estavam 1 para 6 com corredores em posição de pontuação e eliminaram 11 vezes.
Os fogos de artifício chegaram tarde com o home run de Brenton Doyle na nona entrada do apaziguador canhoto Matthew Liberatore. Foi o 23º home run de Doyle na temporada, mas o primeiro desde 29 de agosto.
O Colorado, a caminho de sua segunda temporada consecutiva de 100 derrotas, marcou três corridas ou menos 35 vezes em casa nesta temporada, estendendo um recorde da franquia. A antiga marca era de 31 vezes em 2011.
Com um recorde de 60-98, os Rockies precisam vencer três dos quatro jogos restantes para evitar 100 derrotas. A temporada de 103 derrotas do ano passado foi a pior da história da franquia.
O destro dos Cardinals, Erick Fedde, comandou a partida por sete entradas, distribuindo seis rebatidas, permitindo uma corrida e eliminando 10.
O titular do Rockies, Austin Gomber, não foi ótimo em sua última partida da temporada, mas não foi tão ruim quanto o placar em preto e branco mostrará: quatro corridas permitidas em sete rebatidas em cinco innings. Ele eliminou três e não deu nenhuma base por bola.
O canhoto foi vítima de algumas bolas duras e vários golpes que rolaram até a luz do dia.
St. Louis marcou uma única corrida contra Gomber no segundo, terceiro, quarto e quinto innings:
• A rebatida dupla de Thomas Saggese para impulsionar Ivan Herrera foi a rebatida chave do segundo.
• Masyn Winn começou o terceiro com uma tripla na parede do campo direito e marcou no fly de sacrifício de Brendan Donovan.
• Simples de Nolan Arenado, Saggese e Pedro Pages produziram uma corrida no quarto.
• No quinto, Winn marcou uma dupla na primeira base na parede do campo direito, avançou para a terceira base com o groundout de Donovan para a segunda base e marcou no fly de sacrifício de Paul Goldschmidt para a direita.
Gomber terminou a temporada com 5-12, com uma ERA de 4,75 em 30 partidas (o recorde da carreira) e 165 entradas lançadas (o recorde da carreira).
A única corrida do Colorado contra Fedde veio no terceiro, mas o inning poderia ter sido mais generoso. Jacob Stallings começou com um single e Nolan Jones seguiu com um double para o centro-esquerdo que quase passou pela parede.
O segunda base Aaron Schunk, substituindo Brendan Rodgers, que ainda está se recuperando de uma lesão no tendão direito, levou Stallings com um single para a esquerda. Gibson fará sua quinta partida na carreira contra o Colorado. Ele enfrentou os Rockies pela última vez em 8 de junho no Busch Stadium, permitindo três corridas em seis innings na derrota dos Cardinals por 6-5. Ele não permitiu um home run em duas partidas (12 1/3 innings) no Coors Field, onde está 1-0 com uma ERA de 3,65.
