Se os consumidores da Califórnia estão subitamente optimistas, como sugere uma sondagem, porque é que outra sondagem mostrou que tempos difíceis se aproximam para a economia do Golden State?
Bem-vindo a uma curiosa lacuna de opinião pública.
Vamos começar com a pesquisa de setembro do Conference Board que mostrou a confiança do consumidor em todo o estado revertido para o maior nível em 19 meses . Não só se tratou de um enorme aumento num mês, como também estes consumidores subitamente optimistas da Califórnia tiveram sentimentos financeiros nitidamente opostos em comparação com a queda do optimismo nacional verificado na mesma sondagem.
Em seguida, compare aquela conversa feliz do Golden State com um novo Instituto de Políticas Públicas da Califórnia pesquisa feita de 29 de agosto a 9 de setembro . Esta pesquisa revelou que 61% dos Golden Staters escolheram o lado sombrio desta questão: “Você acha que durante os próximos 12 meses teremos bons ou maus momentos financeiros?”
Para ajudar a explicar esse abismo , minha planilha confiável revisou a pesquisa PPIC que tem procurado rotineiramente respostas para essa questão das perspectivas económicas desde 1999. O último resultado sombrio pode ser visto como um optimismo relativo quando visto através de um prisma de curto prazo. Deixe-me explicar.
Os 61% dos californianos que esperam tempos difíceis é uma melhoria em relação aos 68% encontrados nas sondagens de Junho. Na verdade, este último resultado é o nível mais baixo de vibrações de tempos difíceis, desde 10 pesquisas, para uma leitura de 57% em abril de 2022. Ei, em junho de 2020 – há quatro anos – 80% previam tempos difíceis no futuro.
Parte destas oscilações baseadas no medo foram criadas pela Reserva Federal. Em março de 2022, quando o o banco central iniciou uma guerra contra a inflação com taxas de juros dolorosamente altas . Que política de aperto monetário terminou este mês .
Devemos notar que os sinais contraditórios de angústia económica de Setembro contrastam fortemente com a pré-pandemia de 2015-19, considerados os bons e velhos tempos por muitas pessoas.
As 21 pesquisas PPIC daquela época tiveram em média 40% de tempos ruins nos resultados previstos. A confiança surpreendentemente dinâmica do consumidor na Califórnia equivale apenas ao otimismo médio de 2015-19.
Agora, o quarto de século de sondagens económicas da PPIC sugere que os californianos gostam de se preocupar com a economia.
O pessoal das “más notícias” superou as previsões de “boas notícias” em 61 das 97 sondagens PPIC desde 1999. Ou, em média, 53% dos californianos inquiridos prevêem tempos difíceis no futuro, contra 39% que prevêem tempos bons a chegar.
