ATLANTIC CITY, Nova Jersey — O prefeito da cidade e sua esposa, que é superintendente do distrito escolar da cidade, estão enfrentando acusações criminais após serem acusados de espancar e ferir sua filha adolescente.
Um comunicado à imprensa do Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office diz que Marty Small Sr., 50, e sua esposa, La’Quetta Small, 47, foram indiciados na terça-feira por uma acusação de colocar em risco o bem-estar de uma criança em segundo grau. O prefeito também é acusado de ameaças terroristas de terceiro grau e agressão agravada de terceiro grau.
“Tudo o que as pessoas ouviram foi um lado da história”, disse o prefeito à The Associated Press. “Estamos ansiosos para contar o nosso lado.” Ele disse que sua filha continua em casa com os pais.
“Esta acusação não tem absolutamente nada a ver com o mandato de Marty Small como prefeito de Atlantic City”, disse seu advogado, Ed Jacobs. “Não há nenhuma acusação de corrupção ou qualquer má conduta oficial. Marty e La’Quetta Small não precisam que o Gabinete do Promotor Público do Condado de Atlantic se intrometa em um assunto familiar privado.”
“Marty e La’Quetta são uma boa mãe e um bom pai criando um filho adolescente”, ele disse. “Eles são totalmente inocentes e serão totalmente exonerados.”
Os promotores dizem que o casal abusou “física e emocionalmente” da filha várias vezes em dezembro de 2023 e janeiro. O abuso começou quando ela tinha 15 anos e continuou quando ela tinha 16, dizem os promotores.
O prefeito é acusado de bater na cabeça da filha várias vezes com uma vassoura em 13 de janeiro. A adolescente perdeu a consciência durante a surra, dizem os promotores. Os relatórios dizem que ela foi internada em um hospital três dias após a surra.
Em 3 de janeiro, o prefeito teria ameaçado sua filha durante uma discussão com “jogá-la com a terra” escada abaixo. Ele a agarrou pela cabeça e a jogou no chão, então repetidamente a golpeou na cabeça, dizem os promotores.
Em outra disputa, os promotores dizem que o prefeito repetidamente golpeou sua filha nas pernas, causando hematomas. Sua esposa é acusada de socar a adolescente várias vezes no peito, também causando hematomas.
Em outro incidente, La’Quetta Small é acusada de arrastar a filha pelos cabelos e depois bater nos ombros dela com o cinto, deixando marcas. Ela também é acusada de dar um soco na boca da filha.
A adolescente contou a um funcionário de sua escola sobre o abuso, relata a NBC News, o que levou à investigação. O namorado dela tinha gravações de vídeo mostrando marcas deixadas pelo abuso, relata a NBC News.
A NBC Filadélfia relata que ambos os Smalls permaneceram em seus empregos durante a investigação.
A acusação dos Smalls ocorreu menos de uma semana depois que o diretor da Atlantic City High School foi indiciado em um caso decorrente dos mesmos incidentes.
Constance Days-Chapman foi indiciada por má conduta oficial, colocação de criança em perigo e outras acusações por supostamente não relatar o suposto abuso da filha dos Smalls às autoridades estaduais de bem-estar infantil, conforme exigido por lei e pela política do distrito escolar.
Days-Chapman é uma amiga próxima dos Smalls; La’Quetta Smalls é sua chefe.
