O atual campeão estadual de futebol masculino da Classe 5A, Coronado, escapou por pouco com uma vitória em casa por 1 a 0 sobre o rival Palo Verde na quarta-feira, no primeiro encontro entre as equipes desde a disputa do título do ano passado.
Um chute do atacante júnior do Coronado, Dylan Flores, do canto da área no início do segundo tempo foi o suficiente para levar os Cougars (13-0, 8-0 5A Southern League), número 1 no ranking do Review-Journal, à frente dos Panthers, número 3 (5-3-2, 5-2-1).
“Eu vi que havia muito espaço aberto no poste mais próximo, e não estávamos tendo muito sucesso em nossos outros cruzamentos no poste de trás, então eu apenas deslizei para dentro”, disse Flores. “… Foi muito bom, honestamente, apenas garantir que mantivéssemos o recorde invicto e todas as vitórias intactas.”
Os Cougars acabaram com a sequência de três vitórias consecutivas dos Panthers.
Na temporada passada, Palo Verde derrotou Coronado por 4 a 3 na disputa pelo título da Liga Sul da Classe 5A, mas os Cougars se vingaram na disputa pelo título estadual da 5A uma semana depois em Carson City, derrotando os Panthers por 2 a 0.
Apesar da vitória de quarta-feira, o técnico do Coronado, Dustin Barton, não estava contente após várias oportunidades de arremessos perdidos. Os Cougars superaram seus oponentes por 79-5 nesta temporada, com nove shutouts.
“Sabíamos que, ao entrar na disputa, os Panthers não teriam uma vitória fácil”, disse Barton. “Tivemos muitas oportunidades hoje, mas não conseguimos aproveitar o jogo todo. Foi apenas um daqueles dias.”
Uma briga de trincheiras na área ocorreu durante todo o jogo entre o atacante júnior dos Cougars, Gavin Flickinger, e o goleiro júnior dos Panthers, Landon Blanchard, que fez várias defesas na partida.
“Eu sabia que, ao entrar no jogo, teria que fazer muita coisa hoje”, disse Blanchard. “Tendo jogado no passado com nove desses garotos de Coronado no meu time de viagem do clube, eu meio que sabia como eles jogavam em algumas das cobranças de falta e sabia que pé eles estavam.”
Flickinger, que lidera o estado em gols (25) e pontos (67), ficou sem gols com várias tentativas frustradas.
“Acho que foi um começo lento porque eles eram um time muito competitivo que tínhamos que jogar”, disse Flickinger. “Demorou um pouco para fazermos a bola rolar. Tivemos mais chances para começar o segundo tempo e finalmente conseguimos marcar um, felizmente.”
Coronado também derrotou o No. 2 Las Vegas High por 4 a 1 na segunda-feira, dando aos Wildcats sua primeira derrota da temporada.
“Acredito que tivemos a posse de bola cerca de 80 por cento do tempo hoje”, disse Barton. “Sabe, simplesmente não conseguimos chegar mais ao fundo da rede, e é isso que importa.”
