Pedestre em transição, pouca urgência e muitas viradas. O Colorado Rapids mereceu cada pedaço da derrota por 4 a 1 para o Sporting Kansas City no Children’s Mercy Park na quarta-feira à noite.
O terceiro gol do SKC resumiu o jogo perfeitamente. O Rapids finalmente saiu em um belo contra-ataque no minuto 69, mas o meio-campista Cole Bassett ficou sem tempo e opções com seus pontas avançando para dentro da armadilha do SKC, deixando-o marcado três vezes e roubado da bola.
Enquanto Bassett demonstrou clara frustração com a falta de amplitude, o SKC contra-atacou rapidamente e o substituto Erik Thommy marcou seu primeiro de dois gols na noite.
Na verdade, os três primeiros gols do SKC vieram de alguma forma de turnovers ou erros do Rapids. O primeiro foi no 8º minuto, quando o zagueiro do Rapids Andreas Maxsø errou uma liberação e a bola caiu direto para Alan Pulido, que deu um toque e enterrou a bola de 15 jardas.
O Rapids escapou do primeiro tempo perdendo por 1 a 0, enquanto o SKC poderia ter perdido pelo menos dois. Mas Pulido marcou dois gols quatro minutos depois do segundo tempo, quando Bassett perdeu a bola a 30 jardas de seu próprio gol. Pulido pegou a bola depois de alguns passes, passou por três defensores do Rapids e chutou para o poste de trás para seu segundo gol.
Thommy substituiu Pulido aos 59 minutos e terminou com dois gols. Seu segundo gol foi em uma bola longa para Daniel Sallói, que calmamente pegou e passou para Thommy para um chute bem colocado.
Para o defensor e capitão do Rapids, Keegan Rosenberry, seu time simplesmente não acertou muitas coisas em uma noite em que poderia ter garantido uma vaga no playoff e tirado o SKC da disputa de uma só vez (com a ajuda de outros resultados). Mas não foi por falta de esforço ou desejo, disse o lateral direito.
“Acho injusto dizer que não queríamos tanto assim. Acho que às vezes é retratado dessa forma com a forma como não combinamos a intensidade para começar a partida”, disse Rosenberry. “Eu não diria que não queríamos tanto assim.
“É um desafio, é um ano longo com muitos jogos e acertar e estar concentrado todas as noites — todos nós 11 em campo — é um verdadeiro desafio. Estávamos um pouco fora disso e é isso, essa é realmente a mensagem no vestiário. Não acertamos, tudo bem, esqueça e sábado é tão importante quanto, se não mais.”
Não importa o nível de esforço, o domínio do SKC também se refletiu na folha de estatísticas. Ele disparou 31 chutes contra seis do Colorado (nove a gol contra três do Colorado) e ganhou um total incomumente alto de 11 escanteios na noite contra quatro do Rapids.
Em quase todos os aspectos, o Rapids não foi bom o suficiente.
“Acho que deveríamos dar crédito ao Kansas City”, disse o técnico do Rapids, Chris Armas. “Eles jogaram com intensidade e acho que venceram todas as pequenas batalhas em campo com e sem posse de bola. Eles ganharam isso e acho que é um lembrete para nós. Provavelmente é um chamado para todos nós sobre como esses jogos vão ser. Todos estão lutando por algo.”
Mas se você está procurando por pontos positivos para o Rapids, o zagueiro Michael Edwards teve um momento memorável para coroar uma noite que foi basicamente o oposto. Em um escanteio no minuto 75, Edwards teve um salto estranho e caiu direto em seus pés. E embora suas costas estivessem voltadas para o gol, ele conseguiu dar um calcanhar no alvo e ele escorregou para seu primeiro gol na carreira na MLS.
Com Lalas Abubakar fora devido a uma concussão, a noite de quarta-feira foi apenas a segunda partida de Edwards como titular na MLS.
Além disso, o mais novo jogador do Rapids, o zagueiro Reggie Cannon, fez sua estreia após substituir o novato Jackson Travis no minuto 74. Enquanto estava em campo, o Rapids marcou seu único gol e sofreu o segundo gol de Thommy. Cannon poderia ter feito melhor para voltar a uma posição para defender Thommy na ação final, mas, de outra forma, parecia sólido e trouxe uma presença física bem-vinda em seus 15 minutos de jogo.
“Nós meio que esperávamos que ambos os momentos (o primeiro gol de Edwards e a estreia de Cannon) viessem de uma forma diferente, mas Reggie foi recebido de braços abertos e ele é um personagem e personalidade que se encaixam perfeitamente conosco imediatamente”, disse Rosenberry. “Eu pensei que ele mostrou um pouco de sua personalidade esta noite, jogando alguns ombros ao redor e causando um impacto.
“Você gostaria que o primeiro gol do Mike viesse de uma forma diferente e com um resultado diferente, mas ainda é o mesmo primeiro gol da carreira que você relembra quando termina sua carreira e um momento de muito orgulho. Estamos felizes por ele.”
O Rapids retornará para casa para o primeiro jogo de Armas como treinador contra seu antigo clube, o Toronto FC. A partida começará no sábado às 19h30 no Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
