Caro Eric: Tenho sobrinhos e sobrinhas adolescentes que foram enganados pela avó, a mãe do meu marido, a acreditar que tudo o que meu marido e eu temos será deles um dia.
Eu disse à minha sobrinha que minhas pérolas voltariam para o lado da família da minha mãe, já que tenho irmãos pequenos e nenhuma criança agora. Ela correu para a avó em lágrimas. Como ouso decepcionar suas esperanças de adolescente, evidentemente, de pérolas de ilhas remotas do Pacífico.
Tenho um testamento escrito que descreve onde meus pertences devem ficar. Sei que as crianças aprenderam a ser gananciosas com a avó e estão apenas repetindo isso como um papagaio, mas é realmente desagradável estar perto de jovens adultos que imploram a você antes de trabalharem pelas coisas. No fundo do meu coração, quero dizer aos pequenos malditos que comprei minhas joias com o dinheiro que ganhei na minha carreira, sendo paga 30% menos do que um homem, e eu serei amaldiçoada se der um centavo disso aos meus sogros. Sinto-me muito mal por essas crianças presumirem que são o centro do universo e que vamos empilhar presentes sobre elas, assim como a vovó e o vovô fazem!
Como podemos acabar com a regra por boato da vovó quando os sobrinhos e sobrinhas veem um brilho de joias e assumem, em voz alta e aberta, que tudo será deles? Ou nos importamos?

Querida Glittering: Ah, você definitivamente deveria se incomodar. Se seu impulso é usar uma linguagem brilhante para consertar seus sobrinhos e sobrinhas, faça isso. Eles certamente não têm problemas em roubar túmulos dos vivos; de que outra forma eles aprenderão que as suposições da avó não são verdadeiras para você?
Sua sogra está abrindo um precedente doentio. Eu imagino que isso seja parte de um obstáculo maior no relacionamento que vocês dois têm. Pode valer a pena abordar as expectativas dela com ela. Ela pode estar enganada sobre a origem de suas joias, ou ela pode estar apenas passando por cima de seus desejos pessoais. De qualquer forma, você pode dizer a ela, educadamente, para parar de segurar suas pérolas.
Quanto aos seus sobrinhos e sobrinhas, eles podem não gostar do que ouvem, mas é a verdade. Ninguém tem direito a uma herança. E se eles nem conseguem se lembrar da sua autonomia enquanto você está vivo, por que você se daria ao trabalho de se lembrar deles no seu testamento?
