Kearns • No primeiro dia do primeiro acampamento de treinamento do Utah Hockey Club, Jack McBain estava focado em fazer parte do elenco da noite de abertura do time da NHL.
Longe do rinque, ele tem conferido o maior Costco do mundo com seu colega de quarto e potencial companheiro de linha Dylan Guenther.
Os dois atacantes estão morando juntos em seu novo estado, e patinaram com o pivô Logan Cooley quando o time começou o training camp na quinta-feira no Utah Olympic Oval. As combinações preliminares nesses treinos estão sempre sujeitas a mudanças, mas o trio abriu com química e ritmo sólidos.
McBain e Guenther puderam se apoiar um no outro enquanto aprendiam os meandros de ser jogadores da NHL nas últimas temporadas. Ambos estão entrando em seu terceiro ano completo com o time e estão trabalhando para se tornarem peças essenciais ao lado do pivô estrela Cooley.
“É bom ter alguém com quem você está passando pela mesma coisa. É bom sair do rinque às vezes também”, disse McBain. “Tentamos nos manter ocupados. Geralmente acabamos em um Costco ou Walmart apenas andando por aí.
“Essa loja é bem louca”, ele disse sobre o Costco de 235.000 pés quadrados em Salt Lake City, “eles têm de tudo”.
McBain disse que a dupla vai ampliar seus horizontes e explorar Park City também nas próximas semanas.
O nativo de Toronto de 1,90 m é um centro natural, mas mudou para a ala esquerda durante o treino de quinta-feira, e é provável que fique lá. McBain jogou em 64 jogos pelo Arizona Coyotes na temporada passada e marcou 26 pontos (oito gols, 18 assistências). McBain foi colocado na reserva de lesionados com uma lesão na parte inferior do corpo em novembro de 2023, o que o deixou fora de ação por uma boa parte da temporada.
“[McBain] pode jogar ambos. Ele é um centroman muito bom, para ser honesto, mas também traz fisicalidade, presença na rede e velocidade”, disse o técnico principal do UHC, André Tourigny. “Acho que ele pode ser um bom complemento para Cooley e Guenther.”
McBain chegou ao acampamento se sentindo forte e não teve medo de jogar seu corpo durante as investidas do time. A confiança era clara. O jogador de 24 anos disse que engordou cerca de seis libras durante seu treinamento de verão em casa.
“Eu sempre tento ficar maior, mais rápido”, disse McBain. “Manter isso será a coisa para mim. Isso é sempre difícil ao longo do ano, mas acho que estou meio que aprendendo com o passar dos anos. Eu me sinto bem.”
Parte da curva de aprendizado de entrar na liga é entender como cuidar do próprio corpo durante a rotina de 82 jogos. McBain disse que deu passos largos no ano passado para “se tornar um profissional completo”. Ele e Guenther até começaram a reduzir suas contas de comida para viagem e a ir para a cozinha eles mesmos.
“Na verdade, começamos a cozinhar muito mais”, disse McBain. “Costumávamos comer fora, mas estamos nos acostumando. Eu costumo grelhar e ele cuida dos vegetais e outras coisas. Mas mantemos tudo simples.”
Para que McBain tenha sucesso no elenco de Utah, ele sabe que precisa se ater ao que ele é bom. Sua identidade bidirecional, pesada, mas veloz, acrescenta uma vantagem à linha com Guenther e Cooley. Cooley — 5 pés e 10 polegadas, 174 libras — é menor, então o tamanho de McBain acrescenta alguma versatilidade ao grupo.
“Ter McBain — ele é um cara grande, abre muito espaço no gelo para mim e Guenther”, disse Cooley. “Acho que nos complementamos muito bem lá fora. Acho que temos muitas habilidades diferentes nessa linha.”
McBain tem mais duas semanas de treinamento, incluindo jogos de exibição, para continuar a provar seu valor antes da noite de estreia de Utah no Delta Center em 8 de outubro contra o Chicago Blackhawks.
