PARKER — O dinheiro novo superou o sangue velho na noite de quinta-feira na Batalha do Rochedo.
Castle View estava perdendo por 16 a 0 nos primeiros seis minutos contra Douglas County, mas os Sabercats não piscaram. Em vez disso, eles marcaram 37 pontos sem resposta, correndo a bola à vontade e marcando uma série de defesas impressionantes para dominar a rivalidade no EchoPark Stadium.
O resultado de 37-16 mais uma vez confirmou o programa de futebol mais forte em Castle Rock. Depois que Douglas County venceu os três primeiros confrontos na rivalidade cross-highway de 2012-14, Castle View’s agora venceu oito dos últimos 10.
“Sabíamos que eles iriam sair atirando, porque já tínhamos o troféu do ano passado e eles não tinham nada a perder”, disse o quarterback sênior do Castle View, Derek Gordon. “Mas sabíamos que se continuássemos atacando, eles desistiriam. E dissemos aos nossos running backs: ‘Vocês vão pegar a pedra com frequência. É melhor carregá-la.’ Eles fizeram um ótimo trabalho, e nossa linha arrasou.
“Acho que acabamos fazendo outra declaração (nesta rivalidade).”
O Condado de Douglas correu para sua grande liderança antes que o ataque dos Sabercats tivesse a chance de tocar na bola. No começo, parecia que poderia ser uma explosão do outro lado.
Na posse de bola inicial do jogo, o quarterback júnior do DC, Aaden Parsons, encontrou o recebedor júnior Nolan Case completamente livre na 3ª e 15. Case pegou o passe e então ultrapassou todos na endzone para uma recepção de TD de 75 jardas.
Então Castle View cometeu um erro no kickoff seguinte, quando o veterano Jeremiah Craft tentou reverter o campo após receber a bola. Mas ele correu para trás na end zone e bateu no backjudge, caindo para um safety enquanto uma gangue de roxos o encurralava. Isso fez 9-0.
Depois que os Sabercats fizeram o punt, o Condado de Douglas novamente encontrou a endzone em terceira e longa. Desta vez foi em terceira e gol do 12, quando Parsons saiu em uma chuteira de ação de jogo e passou para Cameron Cayou. O tailback veterano então avançou por um defensor dos Sabercats para entrar na endzone, dando ao Condado de Douglas uma vantagem de 16-0.
Isso levou os fiéis roxos a irem até a seção estudantil do Castle View com o canto “por que tão quieto?”. Mas a linha lateral do Sabercats não se abalou e marcou 16 pontos seguidos para empatar o jogo antes do intervalo.
Primeiro, Castle View montou um impressionante drive de 80 jardas destacado por várias corridas longas e coroado pela corrida de pontuação de três jardas do veterano Aaron Perry. Isso daria o tom da noite, já que DC falhou consistentemente em parar a corrida.
“Fomos empurrados na frente em nossa defesa”, disse o técnico principal do Condado de Douglas, Eric Rice. “Nossa linha defensiva e linebackers tiveram dificuldade para parar suas jogadas de base. … A fadiga foi um fator nisso, porque eles tiveram alguns drives longos e sustentados. Mas tiro o chapéu para eles, porque eles tinham um ótimo plano de jogo. Eles entraram, controlaram bem a bola e executaram suas três principais jogadas de corrida repetidamente e disseram: ‘Tentem parar.’ E nós não fizemos.”
Após um punt dos Huskies, os Sabercats marcaram novamente, dessa vez por meio da corrida de TD de 19 jardas de Camden Tobler. O capitão sênior livrou-se de vários defensores em sua corrida e carregou outro para a endzone, então foi até a linha lateral e fez uma reverência para sua multidão vestida de vermelho. Castle View perdeu o ponto extra, mas o déficit agora era de 16-13 com 7:32 restantes no segundo quarto.
A defesa do Sabercats então se fortaleceu novamente para anular outro ataque — auxiliado por um passe errado de Parsons em um possível TD — e o jogador do terceiro ano do Castle View, Christian Montero, acertou um field goal de 36 jardas quando o tempo acabou no período para empatar o jogo indo para o intervalo.
“Fomos para o vestiário depois daquele chute, e nossos garotos estavam ansiosos para voltar”, disse o técnico do Castle View, Frank Martin. “Queríamos continuar a mostrar que tipo de time somos, porque não estávamos jogando no nosso nível naqueles primeiros seis minutos.”
O Castle View recebeu a bola para abrir o terceiro quarto e continuou exatamente de onde parou.
Depois que um retorno de chute para TD foi anulado devido a um bloqueio ilegal, os Sabercats marcharam pelo campo mesmo assim, coroados pela corrida de duas jardas de Tobler para TD que lhes deu a primeira vantagem de 23 a 16.
Então veio outra mudança de momento quando o Condado de Douglas foi para ele em 4ª e 2 de sua própria linha de 41 jardas. Os Huskies tiveram uma jogada adequada, mas Case vacilou e então perdeu o que seria o primeiro down. Outra movimentação de pontuação do CV se seguiu, com Tobler marcando seu terceiro TD. Este foi de uma jarda para fora, e os Sabercats passaram de no controle para o controle total, com 30-16.
“A linha cuidou do negócio hoje à noite”, disse Tobler. “Corremos bem atrás deles e, para ser honesto, nós os atropelamos.”
Castle View (4-0) continuou a se acumular, com o passe de TD de 24 jardas de Gordon para Sam Harry que empurrou o placar para 37-16 com 7:43 restantes. Agora, foi a vez da seção de estudantes dos Sabercats com o canto “por que tão quieto?”. Os Huskies (3-1), enquanto isso, nunca chegaram perto de marcar novamente, e o safety sênior Zach Bitton colocou o jogo no gelo com a segunda interceptação de Castle View.
“Nossa defesa foi implacável”, disse o defensive end sênior do CV Cameron Ochoa. “Agimos como se estivesse 0-0 no relógio o tempo todo. Mantivemos a pressão sobre eles e nosso pé no acelerador.”
Os Sabercats têm vários grandes testes restantes, incluindo Legend na próxima semana, Valor Christian em 11 de outubro e Mountain Vista para fechar a temporada regular em 1º de novembro. Castle View derrotou Legend no ano passado, a caminho de uma reviravolta de seis vitórias em 2022 e a primeira vitória do programa nos playoffs desde 2018. Agora, nesta temporada, os Sabercats querem levar esse sucesso vários passos adiante, atrás de uma classe sênior de 25 jogadores.
“Temos muita confiança, então será tudo sobre a próxima semana contra o Legend”, disse Martin. “Eles são valentões, e temos que resistir a isso (na frente). A próxima semana dirá tudo o que você precisa saber sobre nós. Teremos que fechar as escotilhas, executar um monte de jogadas complicadas.”
E para os Huskies, que Rice continua a construir em seu sexto ano no comando, a mensagem pós-jogo foi que DC tem muita temporada pela frente. Isso começa com um teste duro contra Chatfield na próxima semana.
“Entendemos que este é apenas um jogo”, disse Rice. “Sim, é um jogo de rivalidade e nossos jogadores querem vencê-lo. Mas agora temos que melhorar na próxima semana e ver o que podemos fazer com o resto da nossa temporada. … (Playoffs) é sempre o objetivo, e sentimos que temos um time com calibre de playoff.”
