As autoridades federais intimaram a diretora de operações para requerentes de asilo do prefeito Adams, Molly Schaeffer, na sexta-feira — tornando-a a mais recente autoridade sênior da cidade a enfrentar o escrutínio do governo federal em meio a várias investigações de corrupção envolvendo os escalões mais altos da administração do prefeito, segundo o Daily News.
Schaeffer, uma veterana de 10 anos no governo municipal que foi escolhida no ano passado por Adams para liderar seu Escritório de Operações para Solicitantes de Asilo na Prefeitura, recebeu a intimação em sua casa no Brooklyn, de acordo com duas fontes familiarizadas com o assunto.
Não ficou imediatamente claro se a intimação está buscando eletrônicos, registros, testemunho ou todos os três. Também não ficou imediatamente claro de qual corrupção federal a intimação foi emitida como parte.
Contatado por telefone na sexta-feira cedo, Schaeffer perguntou ao The News: “do que se trata” e encerrou a ligação.
Fabien Levy, porta-voz de Adams, se recusou a comentar sobre a intimação, mas disse em uma declaração: “Como dissemos repetidamente, esperamos que todos os membros da equipe cumpram integralmente qualquer investigação em andamento. Molly Schaeffer é parte integrante da nossa equipe e trabalha duro todos os dias para entregar resultados para os nova-iorquinos.”
Em seu cargo, Schaeffer desempenhou um papel de destaque na supervisão de contratos municipais para serviços de migrantes, como abrigo, alimentação, segurança e gerenciamento de casos.
Nessa função, Schaeffer trabalhou em estreita colaboração com Tim Pearson, um conselheiro sênior do prefeito encarregado por ele de criar maneiras de economizar dinheiro em contratos de migrantes, disseram fontes familiarizadas com sua função. Pearson estava entre meia dúzia de conselheiros importantes do prefeito que tiveram suas casas invadidas e seus eletrônicos apreendidos pelos federais no início deste mês.
A investigação federal que resultou na apreensão dos dispositivos de Pearson está investigando possíveis lobbys não registrados e propinas em contratos da cidade, fontes confirmaram. Terence Banks, um consultor do governo e irmão mais novo do vice-prefeito de Segurança Pública Phil Banks e do chanceler das escolas David Banks, é um foco nessa investigação e representou várias empresas com interesses comerciais na cidade.
Um porta-voz do gabinete do procurador-geral de Manhattan não quis comentar.
