A semana passada nos lembrou que os Broncos estão em apuros nesta temporada. Mais uma vez, interceptações foram lançadas, penalidades foram marcadas, corridas foram bloqueadas e mãos foram torcidas.
O alarme estridente vem de estatísticas ofensivas que parecem ruins, são ruins e parecem impossíveis de compreender para um time que não usa capacetes de couro e joga em TVs em preto e branco com orelhas de coelho.
Ninguém contesta a premissa de que o ataque dos Broncos fede. De onde vem a culpa?
Há muitos cúmplices, mas a linha começa atrás da linha ofensiva. Como os Broncos registraram 14 three-and-outs e um touchdown em derrotas consecutivas, nenhum grupo foi mais decepcionante quando enquadrado contra as expectativas.
Depois de um treino abafado em agosto, o guarda esquerdo Ben Powers sentou-se no banco e estabeleceu o padrão.
“Sabemos que esta organização se importa em ter uma linha ofensiva dominante”, disse Powers. “Temos muito orgulho disso. Temos que fazer cada pedaço do nosso trabalho para levar esta equipe aonde ela quer ir.”
Em vez disso, os cinco promissores arrastaram o ataque para o lixo, as duas primeiras semanas foram uma série de erros elementares e bloqueios perdidos. De acordo com o Pro Football Focus — suas notas não são infalíveis, mas fornecem um barômetro justo — os Broncos estão em 31º lugar em bloqueio de corrida e 30º em proteção de passe.
Isso não é nenhuma surpresa para o ex-armador do Pro Bowl Mark Schlereth e os campeões do Super Bowl 50, Tyler Polumbus e Ryan Harris. Eles sabem muito mais do que eu sobre as trincheiras, então pedi a eles uma avaliação depois de assistir ao filme.
“Bem, obviamente a semana passada foi atroz para todos. Vimos muito futebol ruim nos últimos oito anos e esse pode ter sido o pior”, disse Polumbus, que trabalha como apresentador de talk show ao meio-dia na Altitude Radio. “Estou feliz por não ter tido que ir contra aqueles caras do Steelers. Eles são realmente bons. Mas a linha O foi terrível.”
Por que?
Schelerth, que apresenta talk shows nacionais e locais e narra jogos da NFL para a Fox Sports, foi direto.
“Toda jogada parece ter um colapso físico, mas, mais importante, um colapso mental”, ele disse. “Eu sei que você vai levar uma surra física às vezes. Todos nós já passamos por isso. Mas não saber o que fazer quando um safety entra na área, sair dos bloqueios e perseguir fantasmas, isso mostra uma falta de compreensão do que eles estão tentando fazer globalmente.”
Ou, como Harris disse, “Em geral, eles estão escolhendo ficar cansados, as pessoas estão muito tempo no chão e não estão sustentando os blocos”.
Os Broncos estão em 27º com 163 jardas corridas, mas 60 vieram do quarterback Bo Nix em scrambles, exceto por uma corrida projetada. Denver está em 30º em jardas de passe por tentativa (5,0) e está empatado na liderança da liga com quatro interceptações.
Sabíamos que Nix passaria por mais dores de crescimento do que Kirk Cameron. Mas não esperávamos que a linha ofensiva jogasse como novatos.
O PFF vê o grupo, exceto Mike McGlinchey, vagamente, classificando Quinn Meinerz em 60º e Ben Powers em 63º entre 65 guardas qualificados. Luke Wattenberg (33º) é o último entre os centros, e Bolles, que tem lidado com uma lesão na perna esquerda inferior, está em 63º entre 68 tackles. A porcentagem de taxa de vitória da ESPN é mais gentil, classificando Powers em nono em bloqueio de corrida e McGlinchey em 20º em bloqueio de passe. McGlinchey, no entanto, machucou o joelho contra os Steelers e ficará afastado por quatro semanas, substituído pelo titular estreante Alex Palczewski.
“É sobre execução. Você vê na fita, seja alguém perdendo um bloqueio ou movimento acontecendo”, disse Meinerz. “Temos que continuar na frente cinco, apontando polegares para dentro, e temos que consertar isso (palavrão).”
O jogo de Meinerz foi o mais surpreendente. Os Broncos lhe deram US$ 45 milhões em dinheiro garantido como parte de uma extensão de contrato de quatro anos nesta offseason. Ele não se pareceu com o destruidor que era em 2023, quando ganhou honras alternativas do Pro Bowl.
“Nas três primeiras jogadas de corrida contra os Steelers, Quinn teve busts em todas elas. Eu achei que ele foi ruim, muitas jogadas em que ele errou ou foi derrotado. Não sei se ele sente que precisa bloquear três caras em uma jogada ou o quê. Isso acontece às vezes quando você é pago e tenta fazer demais”, disse Schlereth. “Ele é um gato grande e físico que pode mover as pessoas. Nós o vimos fazer isso muito bem. Mas ele tem que jogar muito, muito melhor.”
Harris destacou que Meinerz ainda é jovem — apenas 25 anos — e continua aprendendo.
“Ele precisa chegar a um ponto em que use a antecipação tanto quanto reage ao que está acontecendo diante de seus olhos”, disse Harris. “Você tem que antecipar de onde o movimento está vindo.”
Chega um ponto em que as respostas estão no espelho. Os Broncos investiram pesadamente neste grupo nas últimas duas temporadas — US$ 126 milhões garantidos para Meinerz, Powers e McGlinchey — para ajudar a criar uma identidade ofensiva. Agora mesmo, os Broncos não sabem quem eles são, já que não fazem nada bem.
“Levamos isso para o lado pessoal”, disse Powers. “É por nossa conta.”
A má notícia é que os Broncos têm sido horríveis. A boa notícia é que esse grupo tem talento. Eles mostraram isso na temporada passada. Começa nas reuniões, explicou Harris, “ao responsabilizar uns aos outros”.
“Isso também é responsabilidade dos jogadores e do técnico (Zach Strief). Você tem que encontrar uma maneira de falar sobre o esquema e torná-lo divertido, se puder. Com (o ex-técnico da linha ofensiva do Broncos) Rick Dennison, tivemos uma conversa de giz. E você era solicitado a ir ao quadro e elaborar a proteção contra o blitz”, disse Harris. “E se você errasse, você acertava com uma meia.”
Os jogadores de linha ofensiva são famosos por ficarem juntos, acreditarem uns nos outros, viverem nas sombras. Os Broncos precisam fazer isso no campo de treino — onde o olho no céu não mente — e traduzir isso para domingo contra a defesa blitzing de Tampa Bay.
“Apesar do que vimos, tenho muito respeito por todos na linha. Eles são jogadores realmente bons. Nenhum deles recebeu seu dinheiro porque era ruim”, disse Polumbus. “Eles têm a capacidade de melhorar.”
Para Schlereth, começa com a corrida. Ele ganhou dois Super Bowls em Denver com a força de Terrell Davis deixando marcas de pneus no peito dos oponentes. A falta de equilíbrio continua marcante com Denver em 26º lugar em tentativas de corrida. Pior, eles continuam assustadoramente previsíveis. Eles fizeram 32 jogadas sob o centro e 25 delas foram corridas, de acordo com o Next Gen Stats. É o equivalente a dar gorjetas em arremessos.
Enquanto os Broncos enfrentam um setembro esquecível, muitos estão se perguntando a mesma coisa: o ataque dos Broncos pode dar sinais de vida?
A resposta é sim, e começa logo na frente com os grunhidos.
“É consertável. Há uma velha canção de Neal McCoy, ‘Small Up and Simple Down’”, disse Schlereth. “(O técnico) Sean (Payton) tem que tornar isso o mais simples possível. Ele sempre foi um cara que usou várias formações e vários grupos de pessoal. Neste ponto, não parece que a linha pode lidar com isso. Então, encontre coisas que eles fazem bem, e eles começarão a jogar mais rápido e devem começar a jogar muito melhor.”
