O Partido Conservador aceitou mais uma doação de £ 5 milhões do empresário Frank Hester dias antes da convocação das eleições gerais em maio.
A doação foi feita dois meses depois que ele foi acusado de fazer comentários racistas sobre a deputada trabalhista Diane Abbott.
Em março, reivindicações surgiram que o Sr. Hester disse à equipe em uma reunião em 2019 que Abbott o fez “querer odiar todas as mulheres negras” e “deveria ser baleado”.
Na época, o então primeiro-ministro Rishi Sunak disse que os comentários eram “racistas” e “errados”, mas deixou claro que o partido não devolveria o dinheiro do Sr. Hester.
O Sr. Hester já havia se desculpado por fazer comentários “rudes” sobre Abbott, mas disse que suas observações “não tinham nada a ver com seu gênero nem com a cor da pele”.
Respondendo aos últimos números de doações, Abbott disse à BBC: “Estou chocado que os conservadores estejam aceitando dinheiro de Frank Hester, quando até eles admitiram que seus comentários eram racistas.
“Isso demonstra que eles não levam a sério a oposição ao racismo e também pode significar que estão desesperados por dinheiro.”
Os registros da Comissão Eleitoral, publicados esta semana, mostram que o partido aceitou a quantia da empresa de software de saúde do Sr. Hester, sediada em Leeds, The Phoenix Partnership (TPP), em 17 de maio.
Há um atraso de três meses antes que as doações sejam tornadas públicas pela comissão.
A doação de £ 5 milhões do Sr. Hester em maio vem depois de £ 150.000 aceitas em março, £ 5 milhões em janeiro e £ 10 milhões doados ao partido no ano passado, totalizando mais de £ 20 milhões desde o início de 2023.
De acordo com registros parlamentares, ele também presenteou o primeiro-ministro com um helicóptero para uma visita política em novembro do ano passado, avaliado em £ 15.900.
Uma fonte trabalhista disse: “A campanha eleitoral dos conservadores foi financiada com dinheiro de um homem que fez comentários racistas e abomináveis.
“Os conservadores não pediram desculpas e não têm vergonha.
“Se os conservadores querem mostrar ao público que aprenderam alguma coisa com sua derrota eleitoral impressionante, eles deveriam começar se comprometendo a nunca mais aceitar dinheiro de Frank Hester.”
A vice-líder liberal-democrata Daisy Cooper pediu aos conservadores que devolvessem todo o dinheiro doado pelo Sr. Hester porque seus comentários são “racistas” e “tão indesculpáveis e repugnantes agora quanto eram naquela época”.
“O Partido Conservador deveria se envergonhar de receber ainda mais dinheiro desse doador desonrado”, disse ela.
“Eles também devem descartar qualquer título futuro de nobreza para Frank Hester — alguém cujas atitudes não deveriam ter lugar na política britânica.”
O Partido Conservador foi contatado para comentar.
O valor total de doações aceitas pelo Partido Conservador antes das eleições foi de pouco mais de £ 16 milhões, sendo a doação do Sr. Hester por meio de sua empresa The Phoenix Partnership a maior.
O Partido Trabalhista recebeu pouco mais de £ 26 milhões em doações naquele período e sua maior doação de uma entidade individual foi de £ 4 milhões do fundo de hedge Quadrature Capital.
Jackie Kileen, da Comissão Eleitoral, disse que £ 51,6 milhões em doações foram aceitas por todos os partidos políticos no mesmo período, entre abril e junho de 2024, o que foi uma das maiores quantias de doações já registradas para um período de três meses.
A Sra. Kileen disse que isso foi mais que o dobro do mesmo período em 2023, mas “não é surpreendente ver um aumento significativo nas doações antes de uma eleição geral”.
