Para um time de futebol americano do ensino médio, começar com 0-4 não significa o fim da temporada, mas é uma situação que todo time concorrente, ou um candidato aos playoffs da CIF, quer evitar.
No confronto de sexta-feira à noite entre o Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders e o Mira Mesa Marauders, a marca de 0-4 é exatamente o que ambas as equipes queriam evitar.
No final, seriam os jovens Crusaders que conseguiriam aquela primeira vitória da temporada, derrotando o Mira Mesa por 40 a 21.
“Você olha para aqueles primeiros jogos contra o Cathedral e contra o Granite Hills, e nós estávamos certos naqueles jogos. Fazer esses caras batalharem e entenderem o quão bons eles podem ser é algo em que estamos trabalhando. Vamos ter alguns caras de volta vindos dessa sequência de cinco jogos, então estamos esperançosos de que podemos ficar saudáveis e fazer uma boa corrida”, disse o técnico do Crusaders, Rashard Cook.
Saindo de uma semana em que as defesas dos Crusaders e dos Marauders permitiram mais de 50 pontos, era justo esperar que ambas as ofensivas florescessem. E esse seria o caso no início, já que as duas ofensivas se combinaram para marcar 47 pontos no primeiro tempo.
O ataque de Mira Mesa encontrou sucesso logo no início utilizando ritmo e corrida off-tackle com o lead back Max San Agustin. Seu touchdown de 4 jardas no início do segundo quarto deu aos Marauders sua única liderança da noite.
Os Crusaders encontraram inúmeras jogadas explosivas pelo ar no primeiro tempo. O quarterback do Mater Dei, Kartell Purvis, estava no ritmo no início, conectando três touchdowns de passe no primeiro tempo, que incluíram um de 54 jardas em uma excelente bola de costura para Larell Parker e um passe para touchdown de 35 jardas para Isaiah Cook.
Cook marcaria três touchdowns no primeiro tempo para os Crusaders. Junto com seus dois touchdowns recebidos no primeiro tempo, Cook também registraria uma interceptação para interceptação de 33 jardas que daria ao Mater Dei uma vantagem de 33 a 14 no intervalo.

Enquanto o primeiro tempo foi repleto de jogadas rápidas do Mater Dei, o segundo tempo se transformou em um jogo de defesa, com ênfase no jogo corrido de Jordan Dumaran e Jeremiah King, e um jogo de passes curtos para, lenta mas seguramente, esgotar o tempo.
Enquanto isso, na defesa, os linebackers Sebastian Hernandez e Diego Mendoza fariam um excelente trabalho em conter o jogo corrido do Mira Mesa, que fez tanto sucesso no primeiro tempo.
“Nossa defesa fez alguns pequenos ajustes no segundo tempo. Muitas vezes, os jovens gostam de subir no campo pensando que é uma jogada de passe”, disse Cook. “Mas eles se agacharam, seguraram suas brechas e o mais importante é que todos fizeram seu trabalho.”
