Um homem da Filadélfia se declarou culpado de acusar falsamente um membro do seu grupo de bate-papo da liga de futebol americano de planejar ataques em massa, anunciou o gabinete do promotor federal.
Matthew Gabriel, 25, admitiu ter feito uma ameaça de ferir pessoas em outro estado dos EUA, bem como em outro país, depois que desentendimentos com os jogadores o levaram a mentir sobre os planos em agosto de 2023 e em março passado, disse o gabinete do procurador dos EUA para o Distrito Leste da Pensilvânia em um comunicado à imprensa.
O escritório explicou que Gabriel disse anonimamente à polícia nacional norueguesa no ano passado que um membro de seu chat de fantasy football iria realizar um tiroteio em massa no país, onde o jogador iria estudar no exterior. Gabriel disse à polícia para ter cuidado, acrescentando que o jogador viria com armas.
“Em 15 de agosto, um homem chamado [redacted] está indo para Oslo e tem um tiroteio planejado com várias pessoas do seu lado envolvidas”, ele escreveu na denúncia, de acordo com o gabinete do promotor.
“Eles planejam levar o máximo que puderem para um show e depois ir para uma loja de departamentos. Não conheço mais pessoas do que isso, simplesmente não posso ter pessoas aleatórias morrendo na minha consciência”, Gabriel continuou.
Mais tarde, ele admitiu ao FBI que o jogador não iria realizar um tiroteio em massa, disseram os promotores.
“Você não pode expressar emoções por meio de violência ou ameaças de violência”, disse Wayne Jacobs, agente especial encarregado do FBI Filadélfia, no comunicado.
O escritório do advogado acrescentou que Gabriel sugeriu em um e-mail para a Universidade de Iowa em março passado que o mesmo jogador iria detonar uma bomba no campus. Outro membro do chat de fantasy football disse que o jogador iria “explodir a escola”, o que era uma piada em referência à alegação passada de Gabriel, de acordo com os promotores.
O escritório disse que Gabriel tirou uma captura de tela daquela mensagem e anexou ao e-mail com a nota: “Eu vi isso em um chat em grupo do qual participo e só quero ter certeza de que todos estão seguros e bem. Não quero que nada de ruim aconteça a ninguém [sic].”
“Enquanto já estava sendo processado por uma ameaça falsa estimulada, entre todas as coisas, por sua liga de futebol americano fantasy, Matthew Gabriel inexplicavelmente decidiu enviar outra”, disse a procuradora dos EUA Jacqueline Romero.
“Suas ações foram extremamente perturbadoras e consumiram recursos significativos de aplicação da lei em dois continentes, desviando-os de incidentes e investigações reais”, ela acrescentou. “Ameaças falsas não são uma piada ou discurso protegido, são um crime.”
Gabriel pode pegar até cinco anos de prisão, três anos de liberdade supervisionada e uma multa de US$ 250.000.
