Relaxa, Broncos Country. Vamos dar um pouco de graça para Bo Nix.
O início do tempo do quarterback novato em Denver não foi agradável depois de criar uma tonelada de burburinho e otimismo durante o training camp e dois jogos impressionantes de pré-temporada. Agora, os Broncos estão 0-2, enquanto Nix lançou 384 jardas de passe, quatro interceptações e zero touchdowns.
De fato, os números são difíceis de olhar, mas ainda é muito cedo para entrar em pânico. Nix está suportando as dores de um quarterback titular de primeiro ano, assim como seus colegas novatos: Jayden Daniels, de Washington, e Caleb Williams, de Chicago. Uma estatística que realmente fala sobre sua transição difícil é que Nix, Daniels e Williams lançaram um total de 196 passes sem um touchdown. Essa é a maior quantidade consecutiva de tentativas de passe por novatos sem um passe para touchdown para começar uma temporada na história da liga, de acordo com a Opta Stats.
Nenhum dos quarterbacks novatos incendiou o mundo, como alguns poderiam esperar quando foram recrutados em abril. No entanto, isso não deve ser motivo de preocupação. Deve ser um lembrete para ter paciência. Nix, Daniels e Williams não só têm que trabalhar em seus próprios problemas de desempenho, mas também entraram em organizações repletas de falhas.
O problema comum que cada quarterback novato enfrentou foi a falta de proteção de sua linha ofensiva. Williams, Daniels e Nix foram pressionados um total de 92 vezes, de acordo com o Next Gen Stats.
Chicago e Denver estão em quarto e quinto na liga em pressões permitidas. Williams foi demitido nove vezes — empatado em mais na liga com Gardner Minshew de Las Vegas e Jacoby Brissett de New England. Na derrota de Chicago para o Houston Texans na Semana 2, Williams raramente teve um pocket limpo. Ele foi demitido sete vezes e foi blitzado em 41,7% de seus dropbacks, completando apenas 3 de 12 passes para 15 jardas e uma interceptação, de acordo com o Next Gen Stats.
Em Washington, é alarmante que Daniels e o wide receiver Terry McLaurin (também conhecido como Mr. Reliable) não tenham conseguido estabelecer uma conexão. Em dois jogos, McLaurin tem oito recepções para 39 jardas.
Daniels tem força no braço para deixar a bola voar, mas a linha ofensiva de Washington tornou isso difícil. Os Commanders cederam 25 pressões — empataram em 12º lugar na liga. Enquanto isso, Daniels tem o menor tempo para lançar entre os quarterbacks da NFL, com 2,33 segundos, de acordo com a Next Gen Stats.
Apesar dos problemas dos Commanders nas trincheiras, Daniels conseguiu ser o melhor entre os três QBs novatos titulares. O vencedor do troféu Heisman lançou para 410 jardas enquanto correu para 132 e fez dois touchdowns.
No caso de Nix, é mais do que a linha ofensiva que não fez sua parte. É todo o ataque, incluindo a comissão técnica. O esquema de corrida de Denver é previsível e Javonte Williams não tem sido produtivo. Isso forçou Nix a recuar 88 vezes — empatado em quarto lugar na liga. Também não ajuda quando os pass catchers de Denver lutam para criar separação na cobertura individual.
“Confiamos no sistema e nos planos de jogo que estão sendo montados, só que não estamos executando-os”, disse o wide receiver Courtland Sutton. “É preciso todos nós, são necessários todos os 11 de nós para garantir que estamos executando e conhecendo nossas atribuições e executando no mais alto nível para garantir que somos capazes de capitalizar.”
Nix e Williams também não são inocentes. Houve um punhado de momentos em que ambos os quarterbacks pareciam sobrecarregados e tentavam fazer demais. Todas as interceptações de Nix foram jogadas em que ele tentou transformar algo do nada, lançando a bola em cobertura dupla ou tripla.
Na vitória de abertura da temporada de Chicago sobre os Titans, houve um momento no primeiro quarto em que Williams recuou mais de 10 jardas antes de ser sacado para uma perda de 19 jardas. Contra os Texans, ele lançou duas interceptações, incluindo uma no quarto quarto quando ele escapou da pressão, apenas para lançar em cobertura tripla, resultando em uma interceptação do cornerback Kamari Lassiter.
Williams lançou para menos de 175 jardas em ambos os jogos nesta temporada e está com uma média de 4,0 jardas por tentativa, a menor da NFL. Nix completou 59,7% de suas tentativas de passe e tem um passer rating de 51.
É hora de apertar o botão do pânico? Claro que não.
A NFL é difícil, e cada quarterback tem que se ajustar à sua maneira. Josh Allen, do Buffalo, lançou para 10 touchdowns e 12 interceptações como novato antes de se tornar um dos cinco melhores quarterbacks da liga. O quarterback do Lions, Jared Goff, uma primeira escolha geral em 2016, não venceu em sete partidas, enquanto lançou para cinco touchdowns e sete interceptações em sua primeira temporada com os Rams. Duas temporadas depois, Goff lançou para 4.688 jardas e ajudou Los Angeles a chegar ao Super Bowl.
“Ele passou pela tempestade de fogo, se você preferir”, disse o técnico Sean Payton, referindo-se ao tempo instável de Nix em Auburn antes de se transferir para Oregon. “Você está mais bem preparado (e) servido quando isso acontecer novamente. De forma alguma, não estamos nessa posição agora.”
