BOSTON — Depois de jogar com problemas no ombro desde o treinamento de primavera, Rafael Devers chegou a um ponto sem volta.
O Red Sox colocou seu rebatedor All-Star na lista de lesionados de 10 dias com inflamação no ombro esquerdo logo após as 15h de sábado, encerrando oficialmente sua temporada. Mickey Gasper foi chamado de volta do Triple-A Worcester para preencher sua vaga no elenco.
A passagem de Devers pela IL era quase inevitável quando o gerente Alex Cora anunciou que ele provavelmente seria desligado após a derrota de entradas extras para o Minnesota Twins na sexta-feira à noite. Gasper já estava no vestiário do Red Sox quando Devers estava fazendo uma ressonância magnética em ambos os ombros no início da tarde de sábado.
“Ele estava indo e voltando, subindo e descendo. Por um tempo, nada”, disse o capitão do Sox. “Ontem, piorou.”
A doença no ombro direito remonta ao treinamento de primavera, enquanto o ombro esquerdo se tornou um problema quando o Red Sox jogou no Colorado no final de julho, disse Cora. Mesmo assim, Devers conseguiu jogar 138 jogos, coletar 34 duplas – igualando seu total em 153 jogos na temporada passada – e 28 home runs, e estabeleceu novos recordes de carreira em triplas (5) e walks (67). Ele foi nomeado All-Star pela terceira vez em quatro anos, mas optou por não jogar no Midsummer Classic para descansar seu ombro.
“Acho que Trevor (Story) disse melhor: para dar o exemplo, você tem que jogar”, disse Cora. “E é isso que você faz como um grande jogador. Você tem que continuar se esforçando, postando. … O cara que realmente o ajudou com isso foi Xander (Bogaerts). Xander, ele sempre encontrava maneiras de jogar, certo? Foi isso que ele fez.”
“Acho que, no geral, lesões à parte, ele foi um dos melhores rebatedores, se não o melhor rebatedor das grandes ligas por dois meses e meio”, disse Cora. “Foi divertido ver.”
Em sua totalidade, a temporada ofensiva de Devers foi estelar. Ele entrou no sábado classificado no 83º percentil da MLB ou melhor em Batting Run Value, wOBA esperado (xwOBA), média de rebatidas esperada (xBA), slugging esperado (xSLG), velocidade média de saída, taxa de barril, taxa de rebatidas fortes e taxa de caminhada. Embora este seja seu menor total de jogo desde 2018 (sem incluir a temporada encurtada de 2020), ele estabeleceu recordes de carreira em triplos (5) e caminhadas (67).
No entanto, o teste de visão e os números do seu segundo tempo contam a história de um jogador que tentou em vão jogar. Em 84 jogos antes do intervalo do All-Star, Devers atingiu .291 com um OPS de .965, 92 rebatidas (18 duplas, quatro triplas, 23 home runs), 62 corridas e 61 RBI. Ele atingiu .244 com um OPS de .727 após o intervalo, com sua porcentagem de rebatidas caindo de .592 para .402. Embora tenha coletado 16 duplas em 54 jogos do segundo tempo, ele só fez home runs cinco vezes.
“Ele trabalhou em algumas coisas na offseason, e uma delas foi recuperar o fastball, certo? E então ele chegou ao ponto em que não conseguiu”, explicou Cora. “Os times perceberam e atacaram. Quer dizer, foi implacável. E isso começou provavelmente há um mês e meio.”
Red Sox-Twins adiado: Devido à chuva incessante e a um alerta de inundação costeira para o Condado de Suffolk, o jogo Red Sox-Twins de sábado foi adiado. Os times da American League agora encerrarão suas séries da temporada com uma rodada dupla dividida no domingo.
O Red Sox anunciou inicialmente que o início das 4:10 pm de sábado seria adiado 10 minutos antes do primeiro arremesso programado. Menos de 20 minutos depois, eles anunciaram o adiamento.
Para acomodar dois jogos em um dia de folga, a final da série de domingo foi antecipada em uma hora, das 13h35 para as 12h35, e o jogo de sábado será disputado às 17h35. Os ingressos para o jogo de sábado são válidos para admissão ao jogo posterior.
Nick Pivetta começará o primeiro jogo, enquanto Kutter Crawford, que deveria começar no sábado, subirá ao monte para o segundo jogo.
