Para ter certeza de que o Colorado é o epicentro do rúgbi feminino americano, volte ao último final de semana.
Perdendo na jogada final da prorrogação do campeonato nacional, o Colorado Gray Wolves se uniu para uma derrota decisiva e venceu em um try dramático pelo quinto título recorde do clube.
O placar levou os Gray Wolves a uma vitória de 31 a 27 sobre o Berkeley All Blues e conquistou a Legacy Cup na Carolina do Norte, onde o esporte preencheu a lacuna entre a antiga Women’s Premier League (um circuito amador, pago a pago) e a futura Women’s Elite Rugby, a primeira liga profissional de rúgbi feminino dos EUA, com estreia em 2025.
Naquele torneio de campeonato organizado pela WER, os Gray Wolves simbolizaram como o Colorado está na confluência do passado, presente e futuro do rúgbi feminino nos Estados Unidos.
“Este título deixa uma marca no passado porque temos um legado de rugby feminino aqui no Colorado”, explicou o jogador do Gray Wolves, Carson Hann. “Vindo do Colorado, e considerando o rugby de base aqui, é muito importante dizer ao país que o rugby feminino não é apenas uma moda passageira. Nós já estamos por aí, e o mundo está apenas começando a prestar atenção agora. Porque, como (a partida pelo título mostrou), podemos entregar jogos emocionantes e podemos entregar um ótimo nível de jogo.”
Os primeiros times competitivos de rúgbi feminino conhecidos estavam no Colorado, quando os times da CU e da CSU foram formados em 1971. Os primeiros campeonatos universitários femininos também foram realizados no Centennial State.
A partir dessas raízes, o Colorado continuou na vanguarda do jogo feminino. As Scarlet Harlots e as Denver Blues foram as precursoras do esporte como times femininos na década de 1970, e então em 1981 a progenitora das Gray Wolves, as Harlequin Olde Girls, foi estabelecida.
As Olde Girls acabaram se tornando as Glendale Raptors em 2007, que depois se tornaram as Glendale Merlins e, finalmente, as Gray Wolves em 2020. Desde a fundação da WPL em 2009, as Raptors/Merlins/Gray Wolves têm sido a franquia de maior sucesso da liga.
No futuro, o rúgbi feminino local tem a chance de desenvolver essa história com o que o treinador do Gray Wolves (e agora diretor de rúgbi do WER) Jamie Burke chama de “um grande momento de oportunidade para Denver e para o Colorado na história dos esportes profissionais femininos neste estado”.
Anteriormente, o único time esportivo feminino profissional no Colorado era o Xplosion, uma franquia de basquete feminino que competiu na Liga Americana de Basquete de 1996 a 1998.
“Em (2033), quando os EUA sediarem a Copa do Mundo de Rugby Feminino, a essa altura eu vejo a WER como uma das principais ligas de rugby para mulheres em todo o mundo”, disse a jogadora projetada do Gray Wolves Caitlin Weigel, que esteve no comitê de jogadores que explorou a transição da WPL para a WER. “Eu vejo os jogadores como totalmente pagos, jogos que são facilmente transmitidos em, digamos, um canal como o Peacock. Eu vejo que estamos tendo o mesmo ímpeto que a NWSL está tendo. E eu vejo os jogadores não tendo que escolher entre trabalho e rugby, e que o rugby pode ser uma carreira viável para jogadores que estão saindo da faculdade.
“… Vejo o Colorado como um líder nesse esforço. Temos uma história e uma comunidade forte em torno do rugby, então, na minha bola de cristal, o time (Denver WER) ganhou outros três títulos nacionais nos próximos cinco anos.”
O WER está pronto para ser lançado na primavera, com Denver sendo um dos seis mercados fundadores, junto com Boston, Chicago, Nova York, Bay Area e Twin Cities. Assim como Denver, esses mercados estabeleceram equipes WPL.
A nova liga substituirá a WPL, que exige que os jogadores paguem suas próprias taxas e viajem. Isso pode aumentar o investimento financeiro anual para cerca de US$ 4.000 por jogador, estima Weigel. Detalhes sobre o novo nome dos Gray Wolves na WER e onde eles jogarão ainda estão sendo finalizados, assim como as escalações, embora Weigel diga que o clube do Colorado provavelmente consistirá de muitos dos mesmos jogadores.
Burke disse que a liga “ainda é uma start-up muito ativa”. Embora ela e Weigel acreditem que a WER seja capaz de levar o rugby feminino dos EUA para o próximo nível, isso pode ter que ocorrer em um ritmo lento.
Os jogadores não receberão salários, estipêndios ou bônus de desempenho no primeiro ano da liga. E de onde exatamente o financiamento virá não foi revelado publicamente. (Investidores anônimos, doações privadas e patrocinadores corporativos ainda a serem anunciados devem estar entre os apoiadores iniciais da liga.)
“O que os jogadores esperam que haja é o suporte fundamental que começa a nos afastar de uma liga paga para jogar para uma liga jogada para ter sucesso”, disse Weigel. “O que podemos ver em 2025, esperançosamente, é que todos os voos e viagens sejam pagos pela liga. Todos os hotéis, carros alugados, refeições na estrada pagas. Bem como começar a construir o front office para a liga, como o novo papel de Jamie Burke, e gerentes de equipe e treinadores principais sendo pagos pela liga. Então, essas peças estruturais começarão a estar lá à medida que continuamos a trabalhar para garantir mais financiamento e investidores.”

O PRO Rugby foi lançado em 2016 como a primeira união profissional de rugby americana, mas durou menos de um ano antes de fechar. Em seu rastro, a Major League Rugby estreou em 2017, e essa organização também enfrentou adversidades, com dois times fechando após a temporada de 2023.
Assim como a MLR, a WER operará em uma estrutura de entidade única com cada time de propriedade da liga. Embora haja otimismo de que o salto de um modelo amador para um profissional valerá a pena, ainda há muitas incógnitas. Há também o fato de que a WER deve competir por jogadores americanos de primeira linha com a liga da Inglaterra, a Premiership Women’s Rugby, que oferece contratos com salários.
“Fico um pouco nervosa com o fato de que eles vão se livrar da WPL, que foi bem estabelecida, e começar esta nova entidade onde ainda há muita ambiguidade e as coisas não estão totalmente claras”, disse a veterana do Gray Wolves, Julie Tordonato, que joga pelo clube desde 2013.
“Estou otimista e esperando o melhor… porque quanto mais pudermos eliminar esses obstáculos de pagar para jogar e pagar para viajar, mais oportunidades para jogadores mais jovens e melhor será a competição. Mas para os americanos de elite que podem jogar na Premiership, eles estão indo tão bem lá, eles são pagos, então por que eles voltariam? Acho que vai demorar alguns anos até que o WER possa oferecer o tipo de salário que eles oferecem na Inglaterra.”
Aconteça o que acontecer, os Gray Wolves estão acostumados à incerteza, e o clube está preparado para lidar com os possíveis obstáculos que surgirem.
Afinal, o financiamento do clube foi cortado pela cidade de Glendale após a temporada de 2019, quando eles ganharam o título da WPL como Merlins. Então eles perderam duas temporadas quando a WPL foi fechada em 2020 e 2021 devido à pandemia.
“Quando vencemos em 2019 e eles cortaram o time completamente, foi bem devastador, com certeza. Foi um golpe enorme”, disse Tordonato. “Mas também fala da resiliência dessas mulheres que não desistimos. É impressionante que continuamos a nos unir e vencer. Houve muitas coisas que aconteceram em que poderíamos simplesmente ter desistido do clube.”
O clube optou por seguir o caminho independente. Enquanto Glendale continuou a fornecer uma doação anual ao time e permitiu que os Gray Wolves alugassem o Infinity Park por uma taxa com desconto para treinos e jogos, o apoio da cidade — que antes atraía muitos jogadores de elite nacional, como Burke, para o Colorado — acabou.
Apesar disso, em campo, os Gray Wolves não perderam o ritmo. Eles ficaram em terceiro lugar na WPL em 2022 antes de conquistar títulos consecutivos nos dois anos seguintes, ambos sobre o Berkeley All Blues. Por trás da liderança de Burke, a mulher com mais jogos na história do USA Rugby, o time continuou a adicionar jogadoras da seleção nacional, bem como promissoras em ascensão.
O Colorado tinha cinco Eagles femininas no elenco para a vitória da Legacy Cup, além de um fenômeno local de 17 anos, Tahna Wilfley, uma veterana do Kent Denver que foi a jogadora mais jovem da WPL nesta temporada.
“Tivemos uma liderança consistente de Jamie, assim como (do colega técnico de longa data) Mose Timoteo”, disse Rachel Ehrecke, membro da seleção nacional que joga pelo Colorado desde que se mudou para o estado para jogar rúgbi em 2018. “Isso realmente nos ajudou a continuar depois de deixar o nome Merlins. Junto com muitos jogadores veteranos que voltam para este clube há muito tempo, tivemos uma liderança contínua no topo, assim como uma liderança em campo que nos ajudou a recrutar jogadores de elite e trazer novos jogadores para elevar nosso time.”
Para Ehrecke e Wilfley, o risco inerente que vem com o lançamento do WER vale a pena pela chance de aumentar a visibilidade do esporte. Que o Colorado também faça parte disso é apenas apropriado.
Além de ostentar um próspero mercado de rúgbi feminino, que também conta com o Black Ice Women’s Rugby Football Club, o Colorado também é a casa do time masculino American Raptors, que joga no Infinity Park como parte da liga transcontinental Super Rugby Americas, e de um forte cenário de base.
“Meu principal objetivo (no futuro imediato) é ajudar a estabelecer o WER”, disse Wilfley. “Sei que deixarei minha marca neste esporte e deixarei minha marca em algum momento da minha vida, mas neste momento, estou realmente olhando para os líderes dos Gray Wolves (e qualquer time do WER em que eu esteja) para ver como posso aprender e crescer com eles.
“Crescer aqui e assistir à evolução do rugby feminino é muito inspirador para as jovens no esporte. Quanto mais crescemos, e com a próxima fase do WER, o Colorado é um estado a ser observado. Ele tem um longo e forte caminho a percorrer à medida que avançamos.”
