Você provavelmente conhece o San Diego Botanic Garden (SDBG) e seus 37 acres de trilhas cheias de vistas e jardins temáticos. Mas talvez você não saiba que ele também tem uma das maiores coleções de bambu da América do Norte, e embora o bambu possa ser tão alto quanto uma árvore, na verdade é uma grama.
Meu marido fotógrafo e eu tivemos a sorte de fazer um passeio a pé com a Diretora de Operações e Experiência da SDBG, Tomoko Kuta, a organizadora da exposição que viemos ver: Bambu: Belas Gramíneas Enormes.
Ela tinha uma ótima sugestão: comece com uma bebida na mão do Coffee Bar do Cork Oak Café, onde Sammy prepara bebidas quentes ou geladas sob encomenda, obtidas dos melhores grãos sul-americanos. Você ficará feliz em ter uma com você enquanto caminha pelas trilhas recentemente acessíveis, agora amigáveis a carrinhos de bebê e cadeiras de rodas, e quando estiver pronto para encontrar um banco de bambu para sentar e aproveitar os sons suaves do bambu balançando ao vento.
Fatos fascinantes: Existem mais de 1.000 espécies de bambu no mundo todo e a SDBG tem mais de 100 delas, algumas com cerca de 40 pés de altura. Ela é chamada de planta de crescimento mais rápido do mundo, pois, uma vez plantada, cada haste pode crescer mais de três pés por dia.
Embora o bambu seja leve e pareça fino, algumas espécies são mais fortes que o aço. O bambu também é flexível e um grande produtor de oxigênio, bom para melhorar a qualidade do ar. Brotos de bambu fritos são saborosos e nutritivos, e frequentemente usados na culinária asiática, mas o bambu comestível é cultivado separadamente, já que cortar os brotos mata a planta.
Agora que os pandas gigantes estão de volta ao Zoológico de San Diego, a SDBG está enviando aos novos amostras de diferentes folhas e talos de bambu para descobrir o que eles preferem comer. Os antigos pandas gostavam de Beechey Bamboo–uma espécie chinesa de grande porte–mas estes podem ter gostos diferentes.
