LAKEWOOD — Dois programas com algo a provar se encontraram na sexta-feira no Estádio Jeffco em um jogo dramático e emocionante que chegou aos segundos finais.
Chatfield, que busca continuar a se restabelecer como uma potência da Classe 5A após uma aparição na semifinal no ano passado, venceu por 23 a 16 o Eaglecrest, que busca retornar à disputa perene dos playoffs sob o comando do técnico novato Jesse German.
Ambas as defesas jogaram de forma excelente, mas a diferença foi o TD furtivo de Cash Williams de uma jarda para fora, no qual o QB do segundo ano saltou sobre a linha com 19 segundos restantes para levar os Chargers à vitória. Essa campanha de pontuação foi armada por uma interceptação alguns minutos antes pelo veterano Riley Suddath, que teve outra interceptação no arremesso Hail Mary dos Raptors para congelar o jogo.
Para Chatfield (3-0), a vitória marcou uma nota de aprovação no primeiro teste verdadeiro dos Chargers na temporada, depois de vencer Dakota Ridge e Horizon nas duas primeiras semanas. Ainda mais considerando que Chatfield formou 25 veteranos do time do ano passado.
“Sabíamos que precisaríamos de muitos caras para assumir novos papéis, mas, por meio desses três primeiros jogos, estamos começando a nos recompor”, disse Suddath, um dos muitos novos titulares dos Chargers. “Essa vitória hoje à noite mostrou que podemos competir e (eventualmente) vencer tudo. Queremos ir até o fim.”
O técnico do terceiro ano dos Chargers, Kris Rosholt, repetiu esse sentimento para um programa que teve um desempenho de 5-7 em 2022, um ano após retornar à Classe 5A após um título estadual 4A.
“Sempre que você enfrenta um bom time em uma disputa acirrada, eu procuro nossa resistência mental”, disse Rosholt. “Queremos terminar este jogo? Estamos nervosos ou onde estamos? Ver a confiança dos nossos garotos e o olhar em seus olhos, e saber que eles acreditavam em si mesmos é o que eu estava procurando e fiquei muito feliz em ver isso esta noite.”
As equipes empataram o primeiro quarto em 0 a 0, com nenhum dos ataques conseguindo ganhar muito ritmo em um cenário que prenunciava o quanto o jogo iria durar.
No meio do segundo quarto, os Raptors marcaram a primeira grande mudança de momento. O linebacker veterano Ramadje Owens interceptou Williams, colocando Eaglecrest na linha de 44 jardas dos Chargers.
Uma jogada de truque seguiu por meio de um passe de wideout. O QB sênior do Eaglecrest, Joe Steiner, gesticulou para o recebedor sênior Burke Withycombe atrás da linha para o lado direito, lançou para ele no snap, e então Withycombe lançou para o campo para uma conclusão de 41 jardas para o veterano Brayden Black totalmente livre.
Isso preparou a corrida de touchdown de uma jarda de Steiner duas jogadas depois. Então Withycombe acertou Owens em um passe para uma conversão de dois pontos — ir para dois é um grampo para German, que anteriormente ressuscitou Green Mountain como uma potência da Classe 3A — para fazer 8-0 com 7:42 restantes no primeiro tempo.
“Aquilo (interceptação e depois TD) nos deu um grande impulso”, disse German, “mas eu gostaria apenas de ver esse impulso sustentado”.
Chatfield, que teve um turnover ou punt em seus primeiros cinco drives, finalmente ganhou um impulso graças a uma interceptação do veterano Hunter Balderston nos minutos finais do primeiro tempo. Isso preparou um drive de pontuação de 80 jardas, destacado por uma recepção de 42 jardas do calouro wideout Rome Bell, e então coroado por uma recepção de TD de seis jardas pelo tight end júnior Roni Rohlman com 18 segundos restantes.
“Começamos devagar, mas meus treinadores e companheiros de equipe me mantiveram firme, me mantiveram em movimento”, disse Williams. “Encontramos nosso ritmo naquele drive antes do intervalo e isso foi ótimo para marcar. Não íamos nos contentar com um field goal ali.”
Com os Raptors vencendo por 8 a 7 no intervalo, ambas as defesas continuaram a se destacar no terceiro quarto.
O ataque de Chatfield teve um drive longo e demorado que terminou com os Chargers sendo bloqueados em um mergulho de fullback em 4ª e gol da linha de meia jarda. Mas a posição defensiva dos Raptors foi rapidamente negada, já que na jogada seguinte, Eaglecrest lançou um swing pass e ele foi explodido na end zone por Balderston para um safety.
Isso deu aos Chargers sua primeira liderança, 9-8, e o time da casa aumentou sua vantagem no drive seguinte. Mais uma vez, foi Bell quem surgiu com outra jogada de destaque. A captura de TD de 36 jardas do calouro fez 16-8 com 9:35 restantes no jogo, e de repente Eaglecrest estava em seus calcanhares.
“(Rome) está apenas começando a tocar seu potencial”, disse Rosholt. “Para um garoto de 14 anos entrar e ter esse tipo de confiança em si mesmo (no nível universitário), ele ganha tudo o que ganha aqui.”
Mas os Raptors responderam com um passe para touchdown de 58 jardas de Steiner para o veterano Logan Robitaille, seguido por uma recepção de Black na conversão de dois pontos para empatar o jogo com 8:56 restantes.
Depois que Chatfield fez o punt, a defesa do Chargers se levantou, com um longo sack do veterano Aidan Nesheim seguido pela escolha de Suddath na linha de 36 jardas do Eaglecrest com 5:19 restantes. Isso preparou uma pontuação vencedora do jogo em um drive que apresentou uma conversão importante de quarta para curta na linha de 10 jardas.
Rosholt disse que optou por abrir mão do field goal naquela jogada, e depois na linha do gol, porque confiava em seus veteranos na frente.
“Olhei para nossa linha ofensiva, que é toda de veteranos, e olhei para eles bem na cara e disse: ‘Vocês conseguem pegar isso?’”, disse Rosholt. “E eles disseram que sim. Se eles querem isso nos ombros deles, eu vou colocar nos ombros deles.”
Para Eaglecrest, houve muitos pontos positivos para levar, apesar de ter ficado aquém na estrada. German diz que espera que os Raptors sejam um time de playoff e competindo profundamente em novembro em sua primeira temporada no comando.
“Foi uma boa luta, mas temos que ganhar o direito de vencer”, disse German. “Houve muitas pequenas coisas que perdemos. … Estávamos lá contra um time muito bom. Nosso time pode jogar com qualquer um. Não estou desanimado, porque esse trem está se movendo.
“Temos a mentalidade do para-brisa. O para-brisa é enorme, o espelho retrovisor é pequeno, e só precisamos ter olhos na frente… vamos continuar aprimorando essa mentalidade e vamos gostar dos resultados.”
