O Miami Hurricanes chegou a Tampa e lutou em um primeiro tempo de vai e vem com o Bulls. Mas Miami dominou no segundo tempo e finalmente chegou a uma vitória de 50-15.
A USF mostrou que é um time capaz, e o quarterback Cam Ward disse que os Bulls são o time mais difícil que a UM enfrentou em seus primeiros quatro jogos.

Esta equipe pode fazer ajustes rapidamente
O primeiro tempo de Miami não foi o melhor. A UM perdeu a bola pela segunda vez na temporada, levando ao único touchdown dos Bulls no jogo. Os Hurricanes tiveram drives onde sua defesa não conseguiu sair do campo; a USF teve um drive de 19 jogadas que terminou em um field goal. Miami também teve oito penalidades no primeiro tempo.
Os Hurricanes saíram focados no segundo tempo e dominaram os Bulls. A UM superou a USF por 28 a 0 no segundo tempo, alcançando uma vitória confortável.
“Achei que a noite foi resumida pela interceptação de Meesh (Powell) e o ataque assumindo o controle e avançando pelo campo para 80 jardas e um touchdown”, disse o técnico Mario Cristobal. “Esse é o tipo de futebol que queremos jogar.”
A defesa de corrida se destaca
Os Bulls são um time que corre primeiro, espalhando os oponentes com wide receivers e então correndo com o quarterback Byrum Brown ou um de seus running backs. Miami não deixou isso acontecer.
Os Hurricanes seguraram Brown em 27 jardas em 14 corridas (incluindo sacks). A USF conseguiu apenas 62 jardas corridas (89 quando ajustado para sacks) em 32 corridas: míseros 1,9 jardas por corrida. Esse é o segundo menor número de jardas por corrida na gestão do técnico da USF, Alex Golesh, como técnico principal ou coordenador ofensivo, de acordo com o Tampa Bay Times.
Os Hurricanes receberam uma nota de 91,2 em defesa contra corridas do Pro Football Focus.
“Só conseguir focar nos pequenos detalhes”, disse o linebacker Francisco Mauigoa. “Houve algumas jogadas em que nossos olhos estavam ruins, e nós só precisávamos consertar isso. Então era só conseguir fazer nosso trabalho da melhor forma possível e estar no gap certo na hora certa.”
Ward continua bom mesmo quando não é perfeito
Ward é o primeiro a reconhecer quando não jogou o seu melhor. E sábado não foi seu melhor jogo com Miami. Ele perdeu alguns de seus recebedores quando eles estavam abertos e fez alguns lançamentos ruins.
Ironicamente, sua única interceptação não foi um passe ruim — ele acertou o wide receiver Jacolby George perfeitamente, mas a bola escapou das mãos de George e foi direto para um defensor.
“(Eu disse a ele) não se preocupe com isso”, disse Ward. “Eu disse a ele que você tem que compensar isso ao longo do final da temporada. Você tem que me dar um retorno. Mas JG é um dos melhores recebedores do país. Vou voltar a ele na semana que vem; ele provavelmente estará na mesma posição, pode executar a mesma jogada. Ele vai pegar e vai marcar.”
Mas se o sábado foi Ward quando ele estava fora do jogo, ele estará bem. Ele ainda completou 71 por cento de seus passes para 404 jardas e três pontuações. O PFF deu a ele uma nota ofensiva de 73,7 e um jogo de passe de 68,8.
“Eu sei que Cam vai ficar chateado consigo mesmo”, disse Cristobal. “Alguns dos arremessos, ele errou por um triz. Esse é o tipo de cara que ele é. Ele está sempre tentando melhorar.”
Problema de penalidade surgindo
Cristobal mencionou penalidades como um problema nas últimas semanas, e elas foram o maior ponto negativo no que provou ser uma vitória decisiva. Os Hurricanes tiveram 11 penalidades e acumularam 113 jardas — 80 das quais ocorreram no primeiro tempo.
Cristobal disse aos repórteres após o jogo que deu uma mensagem direta ao time no intervalo sobre os pênaltis, e eles os reduziram no segundo tempo.
“Acho que estávamos ansiosos”, disse Cristobal. “Sabíamos que seria um jogo físico, tínhamos que ser físicos. E não é isso que temos sido. Não é. E começamos a fazer isso, e não foi uma questão de querer ou apenas arrogância por não fazer as coisas do jeito certo. É que saímos do que somos. Se realmente queremos mostrar o que somos, temos que mostrar na maneira como jogamos, não na maneira como falamos ou na maneira como fazemos as coisas.
“Estou muito orgulhoso desses caras por assumirem essa parte no vestiário como líderes, como homens adultos, e colocarem nossas palavras em ação e terem um ótimo segundo tempo.”
Isaiah Horton é um destaque
Os treinadores de Miami vêm elogiando o desenvolvimento do wide receiver Isaiah Horton desde a primavera, e o calouro provou isso no sábado.
Horton teve 108 jardas, o recorde da carreira, e oito recepções, marcando um touchdown. A PFF classificou Horton como o melhor jogador ofensivo da UM no jogo, dando a ele uma nota ofensiva de 89,7.
“Achei que Isaiah Horton continua mostrando que o verdadeiro desenvolvimento realmente seguiu seu curso, e ele está jogando um ótimo futebol para nós”, disse Cristobal.
Horton quase teve um segundo touchdown, pegando um passe perto da linha do gol enquanto caía no chão. A jogada foi inicialmente considerada um touchdown, mas foi anulada na revisão.
“É, acho que eu (marquei)”, disse Horton. “O árbitro também achou que eu tinha feito isso. Mas tudo bem. Meu running back vai marcar para mim, então estamos bem.”
Restrepo é um eterno eterno
Xavier Restrepo acumulou 99 jardas e um touchdown em seis recepções na vitória de sábado à noite. No processo, ele se tornou o 10º wide receiver de Miami a quebrar a marca de 2.000 jardas em sua carreira.
Restrepo atualmente está em 10º lugar em jardas recebidas de todos os tempos, com 2.079. Salvo uma lesão, ele pode subir na classificação e entrar no top cinco. Santana Moss é o líder de programa de todos os tempos, com 2.547 jardas recebidas.
“Ele merece isso, com certeza”, disse Horton. “Ele é humilde. Ele se esforça, ele trabalha, e é tudo o que vejo dele. É realmente daí que eu tirei isso.”
Akheem Mesidor está de volta
Akheem Mesidor perdeu a maior parte da temporada passada devido a lesões no pé, mas ele está saudável agora e mostrou suas habilidades contra o USF.
Mesidor teve três tackles, um tackle para perda e meio sack na vitória. Seus números podem não parecer extravagantes, mas a PFF deu a ele uma nota excelente para o jogo: uma nota defensiva de 90,5. Mesidor foi um bloqueador de corrida essencial no tackle defensivo, obtendo uma nota de defesa de corrida de 82,5.
Jogo de corrida em um local interessante
Miami tem se apegado mais a passar a bola do que a correr ultimamente. Os Hurricanes tiveram 34 jogadas de passe contra 28 corridas no sábado (incluindo algumas corridas de Ward).
Os principais running backs dos Hurricanes, Damien Martinez e Mark Fletcher Jr., combinaram apenas 33 jardas em 14 corridas. Martinez ainda teve um jogo produtivo, marcando três touchdowns curtos e marcando 50 jardas de recepção.
Os Hurricanes finalmente acumularam 170 jardas de corrida, mas 91 delas vieram de uma longa corrida de touchdown do calouro Jordan Lyle no final do jogo. Se você remover essa corrida, a UM teve apenas 79 jardas em 27 corridas — uma média de 2,9 jardas por corrida.
Linha ofensiva ótima em bloqueio de passes
A linha ofensiva dos Hurricanes manteve Ward protegido durante toda a noite. Ele não foi sacado nenhuma vez, e a USF conseguiu apenas seis pressões no jogo.
Quatro dos cinco jogadores de linha ofensiva titulares de Miami tiveram notas de bloqueio de passe acima de 80, e o quinto, Markel Bell, teve uma nota decente (62) ao substituir o machucado Jalen Rivers.
Os Hurricanes são legítimos
Miami subiu no ranking desde o início da temporada e encerrou o jogo fora da conferência com uma grande vitória sobre um sólido time do Grupo dos Cinco, o USF.
Os Hurricanes estão ganhando respeito de sistemas de classificação e especialistas. Eles são um time top 10 na pesquisa da AP. O Football Power Index da ESPN os classifica em sétimo lugar no país, assim como o SP+ do analista da ESPN Bill Connelly. O Pro Football Focus dá a Miami a segunda melhor classificação geral da temporada.
A chave para isso tem sido a ética de trabalho e a união da equipe, o que pode ser o que separa a equipe deste ano das equipes anteriores da UM que tiveram começos brilhantes.
“Todos estão juntos”, disse Mauigoa. “Acho que esse time é muito conectado, uma atmosfera muito boa para se estar. Sempre juntos, e é isso que cria o vínculo entre nós. Nós nos amamos tanto que isso se traduz em campo.”
