CLEVELAND, Ohio — Os Browns foram derrotados pelos Giants no domingo, por 21 a 15, mas foi apenas isso que o placar disse.

Perdedor: Execução oportuna
Erros acontecem o tempo todo no futebol, mas eles são mais graves quando ocorrem em momentos oportunos, o que acaba prejudicando você.
Foi o que aconteceu com os Browns e sua unidade ofensiva no segundo tempo. Não parecia que testemunharíamos isso logo no início.
A unidade de times especiais presenteou o ataque com a bola após forçar um fumble no pontapé inicial, e Deshaun Watson encontrou Amari Cooper para aquele touchdown de 24 jardas na primeira jogada, 11 segundos após o início do jogo.
Mas eles só ficaram estagnados durante a maior parte do jogo, com erros que prejudicaram suas chances de vitória.
Jerome Ford registrou 64 de suas 70 jardas totais de scrimmage no segundo tempo e manteve o ataque em movimento. No entanto, na série após os Browns marcarem seu segundo touchdown, um fumble ocorreu e Nova York se recuperou.
Watson é creditado pelo fumble, embora o replay mostre dois elementos: uma entrega estranha e as mãos despreparadas de Ford.
Durante a Semana 2, os Browns lideraram a liga em tentativas de quarta descida (seis) e conversões (oito). Essa porcentagem caiu visivelmente depois que suas duas últimas séries terminaram em turnovers on downs.
O erro oportuno foi o que aconteceu durante a última série, onde Watson encontrou Cedric Tillman no meio. O passe fez contato com as mãos de Tillman, mas ele não conseguiu possuí-lo totalmente ao cair.
Os passes perdidos nas primeiras semanas foram perceptíveis, daí os Browns liderarem a liga em passes perdidos na Semana 2 (10). Cooper foi vítima disso logo no começo, com quatro quedas nas primeiras partidas.
Os passes perdidos foram uma estatística ruim para se classificar no topo durante a temporada de 2023, e os Browns terminaram em segundo (42), por Estatísticas da NFL.
Se domingo foi uma indicação de que erros oportunos estão se tornando uma tendência, isso não é bom.
Vencedor: Mentalidade
Nova York poderia ter permitido que as perdas passadas abalassem sua confiança.
A derrota arrasadora para Minnesota na Semana 1, depois a derrota apertada para Washington na Semana 2 não deram muita confiança para o confronto com Cleveland, que era o melhor time no papel.
Então, os jogadores dos Giants entraram em campo com uma mentalidade de duas palavras, que significa ir com tudo sem nada a perder.
“Essa é apenas a mentalidade da nossa equipe, esperamos fazer bem. Esperança é para perdedores. Tipo, você está esperando (por) fé agora”, disse o cornerback Jason Pinnock. “Esperamos fazer isso porque nos preparamos para isso durante a semana.”
Eles marcharam até o Huntington Bank Field e superaram o time da casa.
O quarterback Daniel Jones teve zero touchdowns e duas interceptações na Semana 3; ele terminou o domingo com uma porcentagem de conclusão de 70,6% para 236 jardas de passe, dois touchdowns e zero turnovers.
A defesa forçou apenas 11 passes incompletos e permitiu uma porcentagem acumulada de 79,25% de conclusão na Semana 3. No domingo, eles mantiveram Watson com uma porcentagem de 56,8% de conclusão e 16 passes incompletos, junto com oito sacks e dois fumbles forçados.
Todos jogaram para vencer até que o relógio marcou três zeros, e isso apareceu no placar.
“Todo mundo vai continuar odiando, nós vamos continuar trabalhando (e) manter a cabeça baixa, é isso”, disse o linebacker Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Perdedor: Field Goals
O domingo terminou sem field goals feitos por Greg Joseph, de Nova York, e Dustin Hopkins, de Cleveland.
Ambos poderiam ter mudado a trajetória do jogo, para melhor ou para pior.
Quando Cleveland ainda estava perdendo por 21-7 no terceiro período, Hopkins errou o de 53 jardas. Esse foi seu primeiro field goal perdido desde a Semana 9 de 2023, e seu primeiro field goal perdido de 50-59 jardas desde a Semana 18 da temporada de 2021, quando ele estava com os Chargers.
Com três minutos restantes no tempo regulamentar, Joseph errou um chute de 48 jardas que teria selado o jogo mais cedo e dado aos Giants uma vantagem de nove pontos. Os Giants tiveram alguns problemas na sala de chutes depois que o titular Graham Gano sofreu uma lesão na Semana 2.
Joseph é um viajante que realmente passou a temporada de 2018 com os Browns depois que eles cortaram Zane Gonzalez. Joseph completou 85,0% de seus field goals (17 de 20) e 86,2% de suas tentativas de ponto extra (25 de 29) naquela temporada.
Mais recentemente, ele chutou pelo Minnesota em 2023, onde completou 80,0% de seus field goals, mas não conseguiu marcar no domingo pelo New York.
Vencedor: Malik Nabers
Domingo foi apenas o terceiro jogo da jovem carreira de Nabers, e ele já nos deu outro exemplo do motivo pelo qual foi escolhido em uma posição tão alta.
A sexta seleção geral terminou o jogo com oito recepções para 78 jardas recebidas (9,8 por recepção), o recorde da equipe, e dois touchdowns.
Os Giants criaram alguma almofada com 14 de seus 21 pontos vindo no segundo período, e indo para o intervalo com uma vantagem de 21-7. Isso também é graças a Nabers deixando sua marca ao pegar todos os cinco passes para 62 jardas (12,4 por recepção) para ambos os touchdowns somente neste período.
Isso também incluiu a recepção de 28 jardas quando ele lutou com Martin Emerson Jr., de Cleveland, pela posse de bola e caiu com ela. Curiosamente, ele não tinha certeza de onde se alinhar antes do snap e improvisou.
“Recebemos uma chamada para jogar, e eu estava meio confuso sobre onde alinhar. E então, depois disso, foi como se eu tivesse transformado em um gol”, disse Nabers. “Eu estava tipo, DJ (Daniel Jones), me dê uma chance. Então ele me deu uma chance (e) eu fiz uma ótima jogada com a bola.”
Mais tarde, ele improvisou um pouco mais na recepção para touchdown, mas com conhecimento dos movimentos favoritos de Emerson quando estava na end zone.
“Fui até ele. Eu estava tipo, ‘Olha, (Emerson) continue cortando rotas.’ Vamos tentar acertá-lo com, um pequeno movimento ao redor, é isso que chamamos. Ele estava tipo, ‘É, vamos correr’”, disse Nabers.
Isso levou Nabers a fazer um pequeno movimento envolvente em Emerson e criar espaço suficiente para elevar a bola alto para o passe para touchdown de Jones.
Ele foi responsável por 56,9% dos jardas aéreas do time dos Giants e é o único recebedor na NFL a ser responsável por mais da metade dos jardas aéreas do seu time (57,6%) nesta temporada, segundo o Next Gen Stats.
“(Nabers) vai ser um grande jogador, ele teve um jogo incrível”, disse Greg Newsome II. “Ele foi escolhido cedo por um motivo, ele é um bom jovem recebedor.”
Com mais de 20 recepções e três recepções na Semana 3, seus esforços também o tornaram o primeiro na história da liga a conseguir isso em seus três primeiros jogos na carreira, de acordo com a ESPN Research.
