NOVA YORK (AP) — Atenção, compradores do Kmart, o fim está próximo!
A antiga gigante do varejo, famosa por seus Blue Light Specials — com uma esfera azul piscante afixada em um poste atraindo compradores para uma liquidação relâmpago — está fechando sua última loja completa nos Estados Unidos continentais.
A loja, localizada na elegante Bridgehampton, Nova York, em Long Island, está programada para fechar em 20 de outubro, de acordo com Denise Rivera, uma funcionária que atendeu o telefone na loja na segunda-feira à noite. O gerente não estava disponível, ela disse.
Isso deixará apenas uma pequena loja Kmart em Miami. Ela tem um punhado de lojas em Guam e nas Ilhas Virgens Americanas.
A Transformco, empresa que comprou os ativos da Sears e da Kmart após a falência da Sears Holdings em 2019, não respondeu imediatamente a um e-mail solicitando comentários.

Lutando para competir com os preços baixos do Walmart e as ofertas mais modernas da Target, a Kmart entrou com pedido de proteção contra falência, Capítulo 11, no início de 2002 — tornando-se o maior varejista dos EUA a tomar essa medida — e anunciou que fecharia mais de 250 lojas.
Poucos anos depois, o executivo de fundos de hedge Edward Lampert uniu a Sears e a Kmart e prometeu devolvê-las à sua antiga grandeza. Mas a recessão de 2008 e o crescente domínio da Amazon contribuíram para descarrilar essa missão. A Sears entrou com pedido de concordata em 2018 e agora tem apenas um punhado de lojas restantes nos EUA, onde antes tinha milhares.
