O quarterback do San Diego State, Danny O’Neil, continua se recuperando da lesão no joelho sofrida há duas semanas, mas a decisão sobre se O’Neil retornará como quarterback titular para o jogo de sábado na Central Michigan ainda não foi tomada.
“Ele está tendo muitos snaps que normalmente teria em uma semana regular”, disse o técnico da SDSU, Sean Lewis, referindo-se aos treinos durante a semana de folga dos Aztecs, de segunda a quinta-feira. “Ele também pegou uma boa parte do trabalho (no treino de domingo).
“Então, vamos ver como essa coisa continua, como ele progride ao longo da semana. O cara que nos der a melhor chance de ter sucesso será o cara que começar.”
O outro “cara” na disputa é o calouro reserva Javance Tupou’ata-Johnson, que começou no lugar de O’Neil na derrota da SDSU por 31 a 10 para a Cal.
“Esses dois caras vão continuar indo e voltando com tudo, então veremos”, disse Lewis. “Quem nos der a melhor chance de vencer no final da semana será o cara que vai começar.”
O’Neil, um verdadeiro calouro de Indiana, começou os dois primeiros jogos da temporada contra Texas A&M-Commerce e Oregon State. Ele se machucou no primeiro quarto contra os Beavers. O’Neil permaneceu no jogo, jogando os últimos três quartos com uma cinta no joelho esquerdo.
“Danny precisa mostrar que está saudável”, disse Lewis, “e que ele é capaz e competente para fazer isso e que ele nos coloca na melhor posição para vencer onde ele está”.
Lewis acrescentou: “Javance sabe que ele está a um piscar de olhos, o mesmo de quando ele foi capaz de se levantar e responder. Esses caras são mais do que capazes de fazer isso, e eles vão se preparar como se fossem os homens que vão avançar.”
Ajustando seus relógios biológicos
A SDSU está jogando no fuso horário do leste pela primeira vez em nove anos, desde um jogo não conferenciado na Penn State na Semana 4 da temporada de 2015.
Os Aztecs farão uma viagem de avião de cinco horas e uma viagem de ônibus de uma hora para chegar à Central Michigan, que fica em Mt. Pleasant, Michigan — a 2.318 milhas do campus da SDSU.
O pontapé inicial é às 15h30 ET (12h30 PT). Isso é mais cedo do que o normal para um programa que joga a maioria de suas partidas à noite, mas Lewis não estava preocupado com os relógios biológicos dos jogadores sendo desregulados pela viagem.
“Nosso relógio interno estaria batendo quase no mesmo horário em que o café da manhã começa”, ele disse. “É o mesmo horário em que nosso café da manhã começa aqui todos os dias, então nossos caras estarão acordados. Eles estarão prontos para jogar.
“Não importa onde seja, qual fuso horário, qual seja o cenário. Vamos colocar a bola no chão. Se você estiver a fim, vamos brincar, nos divertir e ir atrás disso.”
A turma de 2025 se compromete
A SDSU recebeu cinco jogadores do ensino médio para visitas oficiais no fim de semana.
Dois jogadores defensivos da Classe de 2025 anunciaram compromissos na noite de domingo — Segurança da Whittier La Serna High School Kaimana Tufaga e linebacker da Sacramento Grant Union High School Latu Tuiileila.
Ambos os jogadores são classificados como prospectos de três estrelas pelo 247Sports.com. Os Aztecs agora têm 19 compromissos para a Classe de 2025.
Os treinadores não têm permissão para discutir os recrutas até que eles tenham assinado uma carta nacional de intenções. Essa oportunidade vem em 4 de dezembro, quando a janela de assinatura antecipada de três dias abre.
Lewis pôde discutir um rápido esforço de recrutamento de 72 horas, de quinta a domingo, que estava disponível para os treinadores por causa da semana de folga.
“Foi incrível encerrar o treino aqui na quinta-feira e poder ir até a área de Los Angeles para assistir a alguns garotos de alto calibre”, disse Lewis, “e apertar mais as mãos dos treinadores do ensino médio da área e continuar a conhecê-los.
“Isso fala sobre esses relacionamentos, construindo um vínculo mais profundo com eles para que saibam o que estamos construindo e o ambiente e a cultura que estamos criando aqui e que será um cenário ideal para eles e seus filhos.”
Após as visitas escolares na quinta-feira, os treinadores assistiram aos jogos na sexta-feira e depois retornaram ao campus para cumprimentar os recrutas que faziam visitas oficiais.
“O negócio de aquisição de talentos é algo cotidiano”, disse Lewis.
Altos e baixos
As penalidades da SDSU contra Cal incluíram três faltas pessoais de 15 jardas.
A penalidade pelas penalidades foram três séries de 15 subidas/descidas por jogadores e treinadores da SDSU durante um dos treinos da semana passada.
Lewis disse que as faltas pessoais “vão contra nosso padrão e nossa cultura, então fizemos três sets de 15. Nós os eliminamos. Estamos todos melhores por isso. E lá vamos nós.”
A SDSU teve 15 penalidades contra os Golden Bears, mas aquelas cometidas após o apito foram as mais flagrantes.
“Aqueles que são controláveis”, disse Lewis. “A falta pessoal. Absolutamente. … Isso, com certeza, nunca será tolerado, nunca será aceito. Não é quem somos e não é isso que estamos construindo.”
