WASHINGTON — Os EUA estão enviando um pequeno número de tropas adicionais para o Oriente Médio em resposta ao forte aumento da violência entre Israel e as forças do Hezbollah no Líbano, o que aumentou o risco de uma guerra regional maior, disse o Pentágono na segunda-feira.
O Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, secretário de imprensa do Pentágono, não disse quantas forças a mais seriam mobilizadas ou o que elas teriam a tarefa de fazer. Os EUA agora têm cerca de 40.000 tropas na região.
Na segunda-feira, o porta-aviões USS Harry S. Truman, dois contratorpedeiros da Marinha e um cruzador zarparam de Norfolk, Virgínia, rumo à área da Sexta Frota na Europa em uma missão regularmente programada.
A partida dos navios abre a possibilidade de os EUA manterem tanto o Truman quanto o porta-aviões USS Abraham Lincoln, que está no Golfo Pérsico, na região, caso ocorra mais violência.
“À luz do aumento da tensão no Oriente Médio e por excesso de cautela, estamos enviando um pequeno número de militares americanos adicionais para aumentar nossas forças que já estão na região”, disse Ryder. “Mas, por razões de segurança operacional, não vou comentar ou fornecer detalhes.”
O Departamento de Estado está alertando os americanos para que deixem o Líbano, pois o risco de uma guerra regional aumenta.
“Devido à natureza imprevisível do conflito em andamento entre o Hezbollah e Israel e às recentes explosões em todo o Líbano, incluindo Beirute, a Embaixada dos EUA pede aos cidadãos americanos que deixem o Líbano enquanto as opções comerciais ainda estiverem disponíveis”, alertou o Departamento de Estado no sábado.
Ryder não disse se as forças adicionais poderiam apoiar a evacuação de cidadãos americanos, se necessário.
