Antes do jogo, durante o jogo, depois do jogo, fora do jogo ou na entressafra, Charlie Blackmon sempre tinha um plano de jogo precisamente mapeado.
Até agora.
Com sua aposentadoria próxima, o astro outfielder e favorito dos fãs dos Rockies se encontra no limbo aos 38 anos. Ele nem tem certeza do que acontecerá com a barba rala que ele deixou crescer por mais de uma década.
“Minha esposa (Ashley) nunca me viu sem ele, então estou um pouco preocupado sobre como isso seria recebido em casa”, ele brincou. “Acho que chegará um momento — não vou colocar nenhuma data para você — mas acho que chegará um momento em que terei que revelar meu rosto nu. Limpá-lo, cortar o cabelo bem ou o que for, só para dizer que consegui. Mas depois disso, todas as apostas estão canceladas.”
Durante sua coletiva de imprensa de aposentadoria na terça-feira no Coors Field, Blackmon foi sincero, comedido e engraçado ao discutir seus 14 anos nas grandes ligas. Mas ele não tem certeza do que vem depois de jogar sua última partida no domingo contra os Dodgers.
“Não acho que estou procurando um emprego das nove às cinco”, ele disse enquanto equilibrava sua filha de 3 anos, Josie, e seu filho de 1 ano, Wyatt, no colo. “Provavelmente vou tirar um tempo e me afastar da rotina. Estou ansioso para ter tempo livre, passar mais tempo com minha família e fazer algumas coisas de pai.
“Mas, ao mesmo tempo, não acho que você pode simplesmente pegar alguém que jogou nesse nível, que atingiu o nível mais alto em qualquer profissão, e então simplesmente fechar a torneira competitiva. Não acho que funcione assim. Acho que é meio que seu dom e sua maldição. Então, eu me pergunto no que vou escolher me aplicar em seguida.”
Blackmon não gosta de “se envolver” em nada, incluindo sua paixão por pesca e caça.
“Gosto de ser muito, muito bom em alguma coisa”, disse ele.
Ele certamente estava no campo de beisebol. Blackmon entrou no jogo de terça-feira à noite contra os Cardinals como o líder da carreira do Colorado em triplas com 67. Seus 1.797 hits, 2.942 bases totais, 333 duplas e 1.618 jogos disputados o colocam em segundo lugar na história do time, atrás do Hall da Fama Todd Helton. Ele foi selecionado para quatro All-Star Games e ganhou dois prêmios Silver Slugger.
“Sinto como se nunca tivesse realmente trabalhado um dia na minha vida, mas trabalho muito duro”, disse ele. “Vai ser muito diferente do outro lado, eu sei disso. Mas, ao mesmo tempo, acho que essa é a decisão certa.”
Blackmon, que mora perto de Atlanta em tempo integral, quer continuar conectado ao Colorado e às Montanhas Rochosas e já conversou com o gerente geral Bill Schmidt e outros sobre uma possível função no clube.
“Eu definitivamente planejo me envolver”, ele disse. “Eu definitivamente não acho que vou vestir o uniforme e fazer parte da equipe, como um elemento permanente. Mas eu quero vir para o treinamento de primavera. Eu quero vir para o Coors Field. Eu quero estar perto dos caras. Eu quero falar com alguns rebatedores e estar na gaiola (de rebatidas), ocasionalmente. Eu ainda quero muito fazer parte da família Colorado Rockies. Eu só não tenho certeza exatamente como.”
A coletiva de imprensa de terça-feira certamente pareceu uma reunião de família. Quase todos os jogadores, equipe e diretoria do Rockies estavam presentes, assim como o astro do Cardinals, o terceira base Nolan Arenado, que foi companheiro de equipe de Blackmon no Colorado de 2013 a 2020.
“Acabamos tomando café da manhã no mesmo lugar (segunda-feira)”, disse Arenado. “Ele me disse que (estava se aposentando) e eu fiquei meio abalado. Eu não conseguia acreditar, só por causa de quanto tempo ele jogou e quão consistente ele tem sido. Fiquei pensando nisso o dia todo ontem.
“Estou feliz por ele. Ele é um jogador incrível. Consistência é o que eu pensaria nele. Ele é o melhor rebatedor inicial com quem já tive a chance de jogar. Ele é um dos jogadores mais inteligentes com quem já joguei também.”
O técnico do Rockies, Bud Black, chamou a entrevista coletiva de “Charlie genuíno”.
“Charlie tem sido um grande Rockie e ele será um dos meus jogadores favoritos — sempre”, disse Black. “Como atleta e jogador profissional de beisebol, eu o admiro porque sei o que ele fez para se tornar o jogador que se tornou.”
O arremessador Kyle Freeland, nativo de Denver que joga com Blackmon desde 2017, disse acreditar que o número 19 de Blackmon deveria ser aposentado, ficando no Coors Field ao lado dos números dos membros do Hall da Fama Helton (17), Larry Walker (33) e Jackie Robinson (42).
“Nunca vi ninguém trabalhar tão duro em sua arte na vida”, disse Freeland. “Todos nós deveríamos nos esforçar para ser como Charlie dessa forma. Ele realmente é, no fundo, o beisebol do Colorado Rockies.
“Eu pessoalmente acredito que o número 19 deveria ser jogado lá em cima. Ele tem sido um grampo nesta organização por toda a sua carreira. Ele mostrou o que o trabalho duro parece e o que o trabalho duro faz e como ele compensa. Eu acredito que ninguém mais nesta organização deveria usar o número 19 novamente.”
