Os moradores de Henderson, Emily Stevens e Karl Catarata, competirão pela posição de Trustee A no Clark County School Board na eleição de 5 de novembro. Os dois ficaram em primeiro e segundo lugar nas primárias de junho, com Stevens recebendo 400 votos a mais que Catarata.
O Distrito A abrange grande parte de Henderson, assim como Boulder City e Laughlin.
Stevens, mãe de dois filhos, disse que testemunhou o sistema educacional em primeira mão, e sua experiência empresarial e comunitária lhe deram as habilidades para “mover a agulha” no conselho escolar. Ela foi para uma escola no distrito por um ano enquanto crescia, mas passou a maior parte de sua infância educada em casa ou em uma escola particular. Seus próprios filhos frequentaram escolas charter e depois para o ensino médio CCSD, onde seu filho mais novo está no último ano.
Ela atua como vice-presidente de desenvolvimento de negócios da SCE Credit Union — um trabalho no qual ela disse que trabalha para se envolver com a comunidade e criar parcerias. Ela também atua no conselho de várias escolas de ensino médio e grupos educacionais.
Catarata foi para escolas do CCSD e descreveu a si mesmo como sendo alimentado pela família e educação. Aos 26 anos, ele ainda não tem filhos no distrito escolar — embora ele tenha dito que seus filhos irão para escolas do CCSD quando chegar a hora.
Um autointitulado “servidor público de coração”, Catarata é o diretor estadual de Nevada para a Campanha de Direitos Humanos. Ele também é o presidente da comissão de mentoria de Nevada, onde ele facilita programas de mentoria sem o estado. Ele também atua no conselho do Discovery Children’s Museum.
Segurança escolar
Stevens e Catarata fizeram da segurança escolar uma das principais preocupações.
Catarata destacou seu apoio das autoridades policiais e disse que queria garantir que alunos e professores se sentissem protegidos em sala de aula.
Stevens disse que ouve muitos professores dizendo que saíram ou estão pensando em sair porque não se sentem seguros na sala de aula — algo que ela atribui à fraca política disciplinar.
“Quando o distrito escolar puder fornecer um ambiente mais seguro que seja propício ao aprendizado, acho que nossos professores gostarão disso novamente”, ela disse. “Eles poderão ensinar novamente, em vez de apenas administrar a sala de aula, às vezes caótica.”
Stevens é endossada pela Clark County Education Association, o sindicato que representa mais de 18.000 educadores no condado, em grande parte por sua defesa em torno da segurança, de acordo com o Diretor Executivo da CCEA, John Vellardita. Ele disse ao Review-Journal que Stevens seria uma lufada de ar fresco no conselho e elogiou sua meta de retenção de professores.
“Ela quer que as crianças aprendam. Ela quer que as crianças sejam desafiadas na sala de aula”, ele disse ao Review-Journal.
Busca de superintendente
O conselho escolar está no processo de seleção de um superintendente, uma posição que antes seria decidida antes da eleição, mas que agora pode ser adiada, o que significa que os novos curadores teriam voz ativa no processo.
Se Stevens fosse envolvida na tomada de decisões, ela disse que escolheria um “transformador de cultura”. Ela também espera mudar a estrutura de governança para que o conselho tenha mais supervisão sobre o superintendente.
Catarata disse que não importa quem seja o superintendente, ele estará pronto para responsabilizar essa pessoa no primeiro dia. Ele descreve as principais questões como seus “três Rs”: resultados e conquistas dos alunos, recursos para professores e alunos e prontidão para faculdades ou carreiras.
Conectando-se com a comunidade
Ambos os candidatos enfatizaram a importância das conexões com a comunidade — Stevens disse que queria ter mais reuniões públicas, e Catarata destacou seus relacionamentos de longa data na comunidade.
Ele também elogiou a atual administradora do Distrito A, Lisa Guzman, que apoiou Catarata, por seu trabalho na comunidade.
“Com Karl, seremos capazes de construir um futuro mais brilhante para nossos alunos enquanto continuamos nos esforçando para alcançar a excelência na educação”, ela escreveu em seu endosso.
Catarata disse que Guzman fez muitas das escolhas certas, especialmente quando se tratou de focar em comunidades rurais e conquistas estudantis. Ele disse que espera continuar o trabalho que ela fez em sucesso e desenvolvimento estudantil, mas disse que trará seu próprio “toque” e “novo apelo” ao trabalho.
