A UNLV, aparentemente, não será rebelde.
Vários relatórios na noite de quarta-feira, confirmados por uma fonte da liga, disseram que a UNLV permanecerá no Mountain West e não se juntará à San Diego State no Pac-12 quando for expandida a partir do ano acadêmico de 2026-27.
Isso deixaria o Pac-12 com sete membros em potencial, um a menos do mínimo necessário para inclusão no lucrativo College Football Playoff. As escolas: titulares Oregon State e Washington State, além dos desertores de Mountain West SDSU, Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State e Utah State.
A Mountain West não confirmou ou negou os relatos sobre a UNLV até que os acordos de todos os sete membros restantes fossem assinados, o que é compreensível depois do que aconteceu na segunda-feira.
Uma vez que as metas de expansão da Pac-12 na American Athletic Conference rejeitaram seus avanços, a liga em reconstrução retornou ao corredor Mountain West para fazer compras. A Mountain West respondeu oferecendo incentivos financeiros de oito dígitos para permanecer e pareceu ter acordos verbais de todos os oito membros restantes no final da tarde de segunda-feira.
A UNLV e a Força Aérea assinaram memorandos de entendimento que os vinculariam à Mountain West até 2031-32, o que abrange os dois últimos anos do atual contrato de direitos de mídia e um novo acordo de seis anos. Mas depois de receber sete MOUs, Utah State subitamente rompeu as fileiras e pulou para a Pac-12.
Isso invalidou os MOUs, e a UNLV disse que estava reconsiderando. E se a UNLV fugisse, a Força Aérea deveria reacender seu romance para se juntar às outras duas academias de serviço (Exército e Marinha) na AAC.
Não se espera que o Mountain West receba novos MOUs assinados dos sete até quinta-feira. Até lá, nada está definido em pedra no mundo caprichoso do realinhamento de conferências. O Pac-12 possivelmente poderia buscar uma escola menos desejável do Mountain West – Wyoming? Novo México? – como fez com o Utah State antes que a tinta encontrasse o papel.
As outras opções de expansão não são ótimas. As melhores escolas da AAC simplesmente disseram não. Isso deixa pessoas como Texas State, North Texas, Rice, New Mexico State e UTEP. Sacramento State, que joga uma Football Championship Series de nível inferior, lançou recentemente uma proposta para atrair um convite da Pac-12 com planos para um novo estádio de futebol e um grande investimento em seu departamento de atletismo.
Gonzaga supostamente deveria se tornar um membro não ligado ao futebol, mas os diretores da escola disseram que isso era prematuro, provavelmente esperando para ver que tipo de acordo de direitos de mídia a Pac-12 pode obter sem suas principais escolhas de expansão.
A UNLV se tornou objeto de um cabo de guerra entre as duas conferências depois que a Pac-12 foi rejeitada pela AAC no início da semana.
A oferta inicial da Mountain West para a UNLV, disse uma fonte, incluía US$ 12 milhões em pagamentos do crescente pote de caça furtiva e taxas de saída de seus cinco desertores que poderiam se aproximar de US$ 150 milhões. Acredita-se que essa oferta tenha aumentado significativamente após a saída da Utah State, o que significou outros US$ 30 milhões vindo para a Mountain West e uma boca a menos para alimentar.
Uma fonte estimou o novo pacote de incentivos para a UNLV em mais de US$ 25 milhões.
Isso é muito dinheiro para um departamento de atletismo se afogando em tinta vermelha. Um relatório fiscal recente para o Conselho de Regentes de Nevada, que supervisiona o sistema universitário estadual, citou um déficit orçamentário de atletismo de US$ 20,6 milhões na UNLV.
Outro relatório, da Nevada Faculty Alliance em fevereiro, citou déficits orçamentários anuais projetados entre US$ 4,2 milhões e US$ 5,8 milhões de 2025 a 2028, totalizando US$ 27 milhões adicionais. Um mês após a Nevada Faculty Alliance publicar uma história com gráficos detalhados sobre os déficits atléticos “descontrolados”, a UNLV forneceu ao Board of Regents orçamentos revisados com projeções de receita aumentadas que permitiriam que eles empatassem.
A UNLV, escreveu a aliança de professores, não forneceu “explicações públicas sobre como ou por que revisaram suas projeções orçamentárias”.
Se a UNLV tivesse aderido ao Pac-12, teria enfrentado uma taxa de saída de aproximadamente US$ 18 milhões da Mountain West, na esperança de ganhar mais em distribuições anuais da conferência.
