Pharrell Williams revelou que elegia suas palavras de maneira diferente se alcançasse o sucesso de Britney Spears I’m A Slave 4 U em 2024.
O ganhador do Grammy, que escreveu e produziu a música com Chad Hugo como a dupla de produção The Neptunes, disse recentemente ao The Hollywood Reporter que a palavra “escravo” não é uma palavra com o que “jogar nesses dias”.
“Há muitos ângulos diferentes, não? Obviamente, o que minha gente, meu ADN e meus antepasados tuvieram que apoiaram e superaram, mas também está toda a atrocidade que ocorre no tráfico de pessoas todos os dias”, disse Pharrell. “Assim que não, isso não é algo que eu diria”.
Acrescentou que havia “muitas” músicas que diziam “lo que era aceitável em um contexto em um momento e não é aceitável” e outro.
“Mas eu pensei que isso é o melhor”, disse.
Pharrell continuou: “Acredito que há muitas músicas nas quais não diria nem a metade das coisas que disse antes. À medida que o tempo muda, também faço a mentalidade e espero que evolua para um lugar melhor. E não se trata de ser politicamente correto, se trata de ser universalmente consciente”.
A canção de Britney, que inspirou uma atuação icônica no MTV Video Music Awards de 2001, foi inicialmente dirigida a Janet Jackson antes de passar pela canção de Toxic.
A canção marcou o início de uma nova era para Britney naquele momento e marcou o primeiro sucesso mundial de The Neptunes.
“Ela estava ansiosa e listada para fazer a transição. E você pegou fogo com essa ideia. Ele disse: ‘Oh, como é que você sente? Bem, pongamos fuego uma ideia. Vamos’”, disse Pharrell sobre gravar a música com Britney.
O meio estadounidense sinalizou que Britney aparece no próximo documentário de Morgan Neville, Piece By Piece, uma mirada na vida e na carreira de Pharrell através da animação de Lego, mas o artista revelou que não falou com o ícone do pop em “quizás 10 anos ou mais”.
“Creo que la vi no elevador uma vez. Creo que todos íbamos no mesmo lugar ou algo assim”, disse. “Puedo gravar exatamente onde estava, e ela tinha puestas suas gafas de sol, e pensou: ‘Sé que é Britney’. Tal vez não me lembrei. Não há problema de feno”.
Além de I’m A Slave 4 U, The Neptunes também trabalhou com a cantante em suas canções Boys e Why Should I Be Sad. Esta última foi sua última colaboração, do álbum Blackout de 2007.
