Enquanto Campion expressa corretamente preocupações sobre a “cadeia de suprimentos, infraestrutura e as necessidades dos americanos comuns”, ele negligencia fatos simples. Essa política, já adotada por 11 estados, nunca proíbe veículos a diesel de nenhum tipo — nem chega perto. Vans, caminhões e ônibus usados e novos que são 100% movidos a diesel estarão disponíveis para compra em Maryland perpetuamente.
Pesquisas mostram que no ano modelo 2027, quando o programa está programado para começar em Maryland, caminhões e ônibus elétricos serão mais baratos do que seus equivalentes com motor de combustão em termos de preço de etiqueta e custo total de propriedade. Frotas elétricas já estão economizando muito dinheiro para empresas em todo o país — talvez seja por isso que os fabricantes de caminhões não estão tendo problemas mais do que dobrar suas metas de vendas de zero emissões sob a política de caminhões limpos.
Em abril de 2023, o Sr. Campion disse aos jornalistas que a legislação que ele ajudou a aprovar representava um “compromisso justo”. Embora ele tenha mudado de ideia desde então, nossos formuladores de políticas não devem mudar as deles. Agora, mais do que nunca, é importante que adotemos políticas inteligentes para proteger a saúde pública de Maryland enquanto avançamos nossa economia.
