Os companheiros de chapa são tradicionalmente chamados para serem cães de ataque de campanha, contrastando agressivamente entre as chapas.
Além das oportunidades de atacar, o debate dará a Vance e Walz a chance de promover os principais candidatos — o republicano Donald Trump e a democrata Kamala Harris — e delinear como eles se sairiam como vice-presidente.
Os debates de vice-presidente são memoráveis?
A maioria dos debates vice-presidenciais são esquecíveis, mas há exceções, principalmente o debate de 1988 entre o senador Lloyd Bentsen, democrata do Texas, e o senador Dan Quayle, republicano de Indiana.
Quando pressionado sobre sua juventude (ele tinha 41 anos) e experiência, Quayle se comparou ao ex-presidente John F. Kennedy. Bentsen atacou.

Harris disse “Estou falando” quando Pence a interrompeu durante o debate. Em um ponto, uma mosca pousou na cabeça de Pence à vista da audiência da televisão, o que levou a uma esquete do Saturday Night Live.

O evento de segunda-feira é o único debate vice-presidencial programado. É provavelmente o último debate da temporada.
Harris aceitou um convite para um segundo debate presidencial em 23 de outubro na CNN, mas Trump disse recentemente que não participaria.
