Chase Budinger pode esperar uma recepção mais hospitaleira na Viejas Arena neste fim de semana, quando competir como parte da Associação de Profissionais de Voleibol, do que durante sua última visita ao campus da San Diego State.
“Tenho ótimas lembranças de lá”, disse Budinger sobre a Viejas Arena. “Joguei meu jogo All-American do McDonald’s (basquete escolar) lá e, em meu primeiro ano de faculdade (na Universidade do Arizona), joguei no San Diego State. Eles tinham um time muito bom na época, e só me lembro que a seção de estudantes realmente me perseguiu naquele jogo, o que foi muito legal.”
“The Show”, a seção estudantil notoriamente turbulenta da SDSU, pode ser dura com os oponentes – especialmente um nativo do condado de San Diego como Budinger, que escolheu jogar em outro lugar.
No entanto, quando o ex-aluno da La Costa Canyon High School vier à Viejas Arena desta vez, ele o fará representando San Diego como parte do San Diego Smash da temporada da Liga AVP.
Budinger e seu companheiro olímpico Miles Evans enfrentarão o New York Nitro no sábado e o Miami Mayhem no domingo, jogando em uma praia improvisada dentro da arena.
Trezentas toneladas de areia foram despejadas na Viejas Arena na sexta-feira para preparar o local para a primeira das duas paradas do AVP no condado de San Diego durante sua campanha de 2024. A liga compete na nova Frontwave Arena de Oceanside nos dias 19 e 20 de outubro, após paradas na área de Austin, Texas e Palm Beach, Flórida.
O AVP também jogará nos dias 26 e 27 de outubro no Honda Center de Anaheim.
No que diz respeito a locais únicos, Budinger tem visto muitos deles ultimamente. Ele e Evans competiram em um dos locais mais deslumbrantes já usados para o vôlei.
“Tivemos um dos locais mais icônicos de todas as Olimpíadas, jogando sob a Torre Eiffel”, disse Budinger. “O local foi ótimo, com 15 mil pessoas (nas arquibancadas); todos os jogos estavam lotados, então o nível de energia era incrível. Os dias eram perfeitos e os jogos noturnos ainda melhores com a Torre Eiffel brilhando.”
Quanto a este fim de semana, “será divertido jogar em ambientes fechados”, disse Evans. “É um cenário um pouco diferente. Joguei apenas duas ou três provas de vôlei de praia indoor, e elas eram internacionais.”
A mudança de local é uma novidade para os atletas, assim como o formato da temporada da Liga AVP deste ano.
A turnê 2024 conta com uma nova estrutura, com duplas masculinas e femininas unidas. Budinger e Evans se juntam a Toni Rodriguez e Geena Urango para formar o Smash.
Budinger diz que gosta da “atmosfera de união de equipe” que acompanha a nova configuração.
“Você está torcendo por eles, observando-os, dando-lhes dicas e eles estão fazendo o mesmo por você”, disse ele. “Isso meio que me traz de volta aos meus dias de basquete, onde é mais uma atmosfera de equipe do que apenas ser você e seu parceiro.”
