Mais de 1.300 acres de terras da bacia hidrográfica de Connecticut receberam proteção, em uma grande vitória para a conservação no estado, disseram as autoridades.
O governador Ned Lamont, juntamente com o Departamento de Energia e Proteção Ambiental de Connecticut e a Housatonic Valley Association, anunciaram na sexta-feira a proteção de 1.364 acres de bacias hidrográficas de propriedade da cidade de Winchester.
A proteção foi concedida depois que o financiamento federal foi garantido pela Lei de Conservação das Terras Altas. A Lei de Conservação das Terras Altas cobre 3,4 milhões de acres em partes de Connecticut, Nova York, Nova Jersey e Pensilvânia e é uma das fontes mais significativas de financiamento federal para proteção de terras disponíveis em Connecticut, de acordo com o site da HCA.
“O espaço aberto é um dos principais contribuintes para a nossa excelente qualidade de vida aqui em Connecticut, e as terras protegidas pela Lei de Conservação das Terras Altas estão entre as mais belas do mundo”, disse Lamont. “Agradeço à nossa delegação do Congresso e às agências federais parceiras por seus esforços para garantir o financiamento da proteção da terra para o nosso estado, bem como aos nossos parceiros locais de confiança e conservação da terra. Este é um ótimo exemplo de trabalho conjunto federal, estadual e local para realizar grandes coisas.”
A cidade de Winchester é a primeira comunidade de justiça ambiental a beneficiar destes fundos federais, de acordo com funcionários do DEEP.
“Sendo um dos maiores projetos de conservação em mais de uma década, a proteção permanente desta terra proporciona inúmeros benefícios aos residentes de Connecticut”, disse a Comissária do DEEP, Katie Dykes. “Isso melhorará a qualidade de vida dos residentes de Winchester e dos municípios vizinhos, que terão acesso a partes da propriedade para uso recreativo passivo. Também protegerá as principais bacias hidrográficas, o abastecimento de água potável e os habitats para uma diversidade de vida selvagem. Este projecto de conservação e outros semelhantes também abordam as alterações climáticas de uma forma significativa, fortificando e preservando as florestas. Estou grato pela parceria com o USFWS, a Housatonic Valley Association, a cidade de Winchester e os voluntários e doadores privados que ajudaram a tornar este projeto um sucesso.”
As servidões de conservação ajudarão a garantir que as terras continuem sendo uma fonte de água potável para a cidade de Winsted, disseram as autoridades. Além disso, a conservação proporcionará salvaguardas adicionais para o habitat da vida selvagem e uma trilha planeada de acesso público para uso recreativo.
A propriedade foi protegida pela Lei de Conservação das Terras Altas, acompanhada pelo Fundo Fiduciário de Recreação e Patrimônio Natural do DEEP, e doações adicionais foram arrecadadas de forma privada por meio do Greenprint Partners Pledge Fund da Housatonic Valley Association.
“Estou orgulhoso de que 1.364 acres de terra em Winchester estejam agora protegidos graças ao financiamento da Lei de Conservação das Terras Altas”, disse o senador norte-americano Richard Blumenthal. “Esta conservação histórica irá impulsionar a recreação ao ar livre, fornecer água potável e proteger a vida selvagem – garantindo que as terras altas de Connecticut continuem a ser um tesouro ambiental para as gerações vindouras.”
A cidade de Winchester ainda será proprietária do terreno e operará sua empresa municipal de água, segundo autoridades.
“A Lei de Conservação das Terras Altas é uma ferramenta fenomenal, permitindo que as agências estaduais conservem áreas prioritárias nesta paisagem vital”, disse a vice-diretora regional do Serviço de Pesca e Vida Selvagem dos EUA, Kyla Hastie. “Somos um parceiro orgulhoso neste esforço e aplaudimos o Connecticut DEEP e a Housatonic Valley Association pelo seu foco na conservação em comunidades historicamente marginalizadas.”
