ANN ARBOR, MICH. – Perderam 21 pontos no quarto período, cometeram sete pênaltis, desistiram de cinco sacks e correram apenas 38 jardas. Mesmo assim, lá estavam os Gophers, atrás do número 12 do Michigan por apenas 27-24, faltando 1:37 para o final do sábado no Michigan Stadium.
O chutador dos Gophers, Dragan Kesich, alinhou-se para o chute lateral e deixou-o rasgar com o pé esquerdo. A bola deu alguns saltos, ricocheteou no pé de um companheiro e rodou pela linha lateral. O linebacker do Minnesota, Matt Kingsbury, pulou na bola, recuperando-a na linha de 38 jardas do Michigan, aparentemente dando ao seu time uma chance de empatar o placar ou vencer o jogo.
A multidão de 110.304 pessoas engasgou quando a jogada levou a linha lateral dos Gophers a um frenesi de comemoração.
As autoridades determinaram que Kingsbury estava impedido, julgando que ele ultrapassou a linha de 35 jardas antes de Kesich chutar a bola. Replays e fotos parecem sugerir o contrário.
Depois de fazer tudo de novo, Michigan recuperou o segundo chute lateral e esgotou o tempo na vitória por 27 a 24 para o Little Brown Jug em um dia chuvoso.
O técnico dos Gophers, PJ Fleck, não criticou os árbitros em relação à jogada, acrescentando que não viu o replay.
“Eu não vi a última jogada, nem uma jogada ganha ou perde o jogo”, disse Fleck. “Todo mundo vai se concentrar nisso. Eu não vou sentar aqui e ser multado [by the Big Ten office]. Tenho mais respeito pelo meu chefe [athletic director Mark Coyle] e a Universidade de Minnesota e as Dez Grandes.
