MILWAUKEE – O Mets parece ter evitado o pior quando se trata de Francisco Alvarez. O receptor não estava na escalação no sábado, uma noite após ser afastado de um jogo com espasmos nas costas, mas deve estar disponível fora do banco no segundo jogo de uma série de três jogos contra o Milwaukee Brewers.
Alvarez treinou no sábado à tarde e praticou rebatidas. Ao sair do campo, o técnico Carlos Mendoza notou que ele parecia “muito bem”.
“Acho que temos um jogador”, disse Mendoza. “Foi muito assustador. Ontem eu estava na sede do clube quando ele entrou e não parecia muito bem, mas quando saímos do estádio ele estava em uma posição bem melhor. Cheguei hoje e a mesma coisa.
No entanto, poderia ser mais benéfico ter Luis Torrens atrás da base neste fim de semana. Alvarez lutou para bloquear arremessos na terra e controlar o jogo corrido na noite de sexta-feira, com os Brewers roubando seis bases combinadas contra Alvarez e Torrens. Milwaukee tem um grupo de corredores agressivos que conseguem bons saltos e Torrens tem sido mais eficaz em expulsar corredores do que Alvarez nesta temporada.
No entanto, Mendoza disse que tudo começa com os arremessadores, desviando as críticas de seu jovem apanhador.
“Há muito barulho com Alvarez, mas acho que começa no monte”, disse Mendoza. “Temos que dar uma chance aos apanhadores. [The Brewers] são realmente bons. Eles não são apenas rápidos, mas têm informações, vão pegar algumas dicas se tiverem. E então tivemos que fazer um bom trabalho para proteger nossa casa.”
Os Brewers claramente fizeram seu dever de casa com Alvarez, que permitiu 63 bases roubadas nesta temporada e pegou apenas 14 corredores roubando. Ele também permitiu 40 arremessos selvagens e foi cobrado com 10 bolas passadas, ambos os quais foram um problema na derrota de sexta à noite.
Statcast classifica Alvarez bem abaixo da média quando se trata de bloqueio, mas seus tempos pop e enquadramento são bem avaliados. Os arremessadores adoram arremessar para ele e sentem que ele lida bem com os árbitros.
Falando em árbitros, Alvarez disse que planejava pedir desculpas a Ramon De Jesus, que ligou para ele em um campo abaixo da zona na noite de sexta-feira, após uma rebatida de 10 arremessos. Alvarez atacou o árbitro de frustração e se sentiu mal com isso.
“Eu realmente acho que estava fazendo demais”, disse Alvarez. “Ele só perde um arremesso e também é uma pessoa, então pode errar arremessos. Mas no momento, o jogo [went] mais rápido para mim. Quando ele [made] naquela ligação, eu estava com uma expressão ruim. Eu realmente não preciso fazer isso, então vou pedir desculpas amanhã e vamos continuar.”
Mendoza saiu em defesa de Alvarez e foi expulso por De Jesus. O capitão reconhece que o seu jovem apanhador pretende consertar as coisas, mas não teve problemas com a forma como se comportou.
“Estamos competindo e ele reagiu da maneira que reagiu porque cada arremesso e cada rebatida significa alguma coisa”, disse Mendoza. “Ele fez uma ótima rebatida, pensou que andou e antes que você perceba, ele está voltando para o banco de reservas. Então ele demonstrou frustração, o que é normal, mas foi por isso que entrei ali…
“Ele sabe que eles são humanos, ele sabe que estão trabalhando duro. Seguiremos em frente.”
Quanto a um pedido de desculpas de Mendoza? De Jesus não deveria esperar um.
“Acho que não preciso”, disse Mendoza.
ESTADO DE LINDOR
Francisco Lindor estava na escalação como DH sábado e Luisangel Acuña jogou como interbases. O Mets insiste que se sente confortável em usar Lindor como shortstop enquanto ele luta contra dores nas costas, mas o shortstop ainda está tendo problemas para se curvar. Depois de jogar todos os nove no shortstop na noite de sexta-feira pela primeira vez em duas semanas, o Mets decidiu usá-lo no DH para lhe dar um fôlego defensivo.
“Achei que depois de deixá-lo caído por 10 a 11 dias, jogar consecutivamente em campo não é o ideal”, disse Mendoza. “O fato de ele estar na escalação, temos que tentar mantê-lo assim pelo maior tempo possível.”
SALA DO TREINADOR
O Mets não receberá nenhum arremessador lesionado tão cedo. O destro Kodai Senga (dor no tríceps) não tem data prevista para uma sessão de bullpen ao vivo, Paul Blackburn ainda está sentindo dores nas costas e o apaziguador Sean Reid-Foley (impacto no ombro) está fora pelo resto da temporada.
No entanto, o infielder Jeff McNeil fez radiografias do pulso fraturado na sexta-feira e espera-se que comece a fortalecer a articulação nos próximos dias, em antecipação ao início das atividades de beisebol.
McNeil está malhando na Califórnia quando reside fora da temporada. Com sua esposa, Tatiana, perto de dar à luz seu segundo filho, o Mets permitiu que ele voltasse para sua casa na Costa Central para continuar a reabilitação. A equipe não descartou o retorno de McNeil na pós-temporada, caso o Mets consiga avançar.
