Várias pessoas morreram em um acidente de avião no final da tarde de sábado, enquanto o piloto tentava pousar no Wright Brothers National Memorial em Kill Devil Hills.
Testemunhas relataram ter visto o avião monomotor tentando pousar na pista de pouso do primeiro vôo do monumento por volta das 17h, antes de cair na floresta. O avião então pegou fogo, disse o porta-voz do Serviço Nacional de Parques, Michael Barber, em um comunicado.
“Várias mortes de passageiros foram confirmadas”, disse ele.
O serviço do parque não divulgou o modelo do avião nem informou de onde ele vinha.
O Wright Brothers Memorial estará fechado no domingo e a First Flight Airstrip, uma faixa de 3.000 pés no local de nascimento do voo, está fechada até novo aviso, disse Barber.
O National Transportation Safety Board investigará o incidente e a FAA foi notificada.
