Perdido em tudo isso – na semana que foi para o atletismo da UNLV, nas histórias sobre um quarterback dizendo que lhe deviam US$ 100.000, na decisão de permanecer em uma conferência que os rebeldes ajudaram a formar – estava um jovem que não tinha nada a ver com nada disso.
Hajj-Malik Williams só queria uma oportunidade.
Fale sobre como aproveitar ao máximo.
Talvez seja por isso que seus companheiros de equipe se reuniram com tanto fervor em torno dele enquanto a saga de Matthew Sluka se desenrolava. Talvez o veterano transferido Williams possua esse tipo de qualidades de liderança.
Claro que parecia que era sábado.
Williams mais do que fez sua parte como o novo quarterback titular dos Rebels, direcionando UNLV para uma derrota por 59-14 em Fresno State antes de 24.638 no Allegiant Stadium.
“Temos uma equipe madura”, disse o técnico do UNLV, Barry Odom. “As coisas que eles lidaram e a maneira como nos preparamos, não apenas durante a semana de folga, mas também durante a semana de jogo.”
Uma declaração séria
Foi a estreia do Mountain West para o UNLV, e os Rebels fizeram uma declaração séria sobre seu desejo de retornar a um jogo do campeonato da liga e lutar por uma vaga no College Football Playoff.
Eles estão 4-0 pela primeira vez desde que entraram na Divisão I em 1978 e ficaram em 23º lugar na votação dos treinadores, merecendo todo o amor nacional que está chegando agora.
Superar as adversidades mostra a verdadeira força de qualquer equipe. Como ele responde. E os rebeldes fizeram isso com louvor.
Raramente vi um time jogar com tanta emoção, provavelmente rejeitado pelo que ocorreu internamente.
Sluka, por meio de um agente, afirmou que um assistente técnico da UNLV lhe prometeu US$ 100.000 em um acordo de nome, imagem e semelhança durante o processo de recrutamento. O coletivo NIL da UNLV negou saber qualquer coisa sobre isso até ser informado em agosto. A coisa toda foi uma história confusa.
Então Sluka optou por usar seu ano redshirt e sair da escola. Assim, Williams assumiria o papel de titular. Ele foi ótimo.
Williams completou 13 de 16 passes para 182 jardas e três pontuações enquanto corria para 119 jardas, o melhor do time, com um touchdown.

A semana que foi para UNLV?
Desconhecido, agitado, controverso, satisfatório.
Os rebeldes nos últimos dias estiveram no centro das duas maiores histórias do atletismo universitário. Essas são manchetes massivas para uma universidade não acostumada com tal publicidade.
Além do que aconteceu com Sluka, a UNLV tomou a decisão de permanecer em Mountain West e não se juntar aos cinco desertores da conferência ao Pac-12, incluindo os Bulldogs.
Quando questionado se ele já havia experimentado uma semana assim durante sua carreira, o diretor atlético da UNLV, Erick Harper, respondeu:
Absolutamente não.
“O mais importante como diretor de atletismo, quando você tem algo assim, as dificuldades dessas coisas que surgem, é que você tem que conseguir compartimentá-las separadamente para não cruzar uma com a outra de um perspectiva emocional”, disse Harper. “Você precisa estar equilibrado com sua equipe enquanto começa a avaliar e determinar como responderemos às várias coisas diferentes.”
Bem, o time de futebol definitivamente respondeu atrás de Williams.
Passando ataque
Ele parecia tão confortável no ataque quanto um quarterback, seja no ar ou no solo.
Ele é um passador melhor que Sluka, e isso ficou evidente o tempo todo, marcado por um jogo fantástico do wide receiver Ricky White (10 recepções, 127 jardas, três gols no total).
“A mudança (no quarterback) foi definitivamente boa para nós”, disse White. “Abençoado, grato. Acabamos de ir trabalhar. Como eu disse, (Williams) foi um dos primeiros zagueiros aqui, então aquelas repetições de primavera e tudo o que recebemos dele foram um relógio para nós. Nós apenas continuamos a segui-lo. Ele é um grande líder. Um tremendo líder.”
E faltando 12h17 para o fim do jogo e UNLV ganhando 31, esse canto ecoou de um canto do estádio:
“Quem precisa de Sluka! Quem precisa de Sluka!”
Não os rebeldes neste dia.
Não com esta versão de Hajj-Malik Williams.
