ORLANDO – Alguns dias você vence os Bears. Mas Shedeur Sanders não iria deixar Will Sheppard dizer que os Bears o venceram.
“Eu disse a ele: ‘Esta é a semana, mano. Esta é a semana’”, lembrou Sanders, quarterback sênior do CU, após uma vitória impressionante por 48-21 na UCF na noite de sábado. “’Tem que acontecer esta semana.’”
Aconteceu na terceira tentativa dos Buffs no jogo. Uma semana depois de Sheppard, uma transferência de Vanderbilt, ter perdido um passe que poderia empatar o jogo no final do quarto período contra Baylor em Folsom Field, o sinalizador de CU olhou em sua direção mais cedo. E parecia profundo.
Na terceira para 15 na linha de 47 jardas dos Knights, Sanders recuou, deu um passo para a esquerda e disparou um golpe sobre a secundária da UCF e no caminho de Sheppard, que estava cortando uma rota de poste para dentro da marca direita para o gol linha.
Sheppard se posicionou na frente do zagueiro da UCF, Antione Jackson, e estendeu o corpo para finalizar a recepção, rolando para a end zone com a bola e dando aos visitantes uma vantagem de 13-7 faltando 10 segundos para o final do primeiro quarto.
“Tentei não me abater no final”, disse Sheppard, que terminou com quatro agarramentos para 99 jardas de recepção, incluindo seu primeiro touchdown como Buff. “Só sei quem sou, por que estou aqui e por que vim aqui.
“E acho que (sábado) provou isso e mostrou isso. E (Sanders) tendo essa confiança e a confiança para continuar avançando e jogando a bola para mim e aproveitando essas chances, sabendo que vou sofrer em (momentos) como este – é só um pouco mais de confiança em meu.”
Essa confiança provou ser contagiante. Sheppard imediatamente se levantou de sua recepção e silenciou os alunos dos Knights, cujas zombarias estavam bem ao alcance da voz.
Foi o primeiro jogo de Sheppard na CU com pelo menos 90 jardas de recepção, e o primeiro como colegiado desde que perdeu 107 na Flórida como membro dos Commodores em outubro passado.
“Ele simplesmente teve um início lento”, disse Sanders sobre seu alvo. “(Eu disse a ele): ‘Tipo, não fique chateado com isso… isso acontece com todo mundo.’ Porque eu sei o tipo de jogador que ele é – eu sei (quando) ele está se sentindo bem, e (quando) ele está realmente no seu ritmo, e quando ele está confortável, então ninguém pode pará-lo porque ele está indo contra o melhor escanteio (do país ) na prática todos os dias, ao longo do seu tempo (aqui).
“Então essa foi realmente a mensagem para ele durante toda a semana. ‘Tipo, é o seu jogo. A semana é sua’… e a oportunidade apareceu. E eu digo, ‘Ei, é isso. Bem, você tem que pegar esse. Então ele fez uma jogada.”
Sheppard, natural da Louisiana, liderou Vandy no outono passado com 684 jardas e oito recepções para touchdown. Suas 21 recepções de TD na carreira com os ‘Dores ficaram empatadas em terceiro lugar na história de Vandy neste outono.
CU marcou touchdowns em três tentativas consecutivas entre o primeiro e o segundo quartos contra a UCF para forjar uma vantagem de 21-7 faltando 12:21 para o intervalo.
A vitória de 24 pontos no sábado foi a maior margem de vitória para Sheppard em um jogo universitário desde que Vandy pisoteou o Havaí na estrada, por 63-10, para abrir a temporada de 2022.
“Quero dizer, vocês sabem de onde eu vim, Vanderbilt”, disse Sheppard após a quarta vitória dos Buffs na temporada. “Então essa é a vitória mais completa que já tive.”
