JERUSALÉM — Um míssil disparado pelos terroristas Houthi do Iêmen apoiados pelo Irã caiu em uma área aberta no centro de Israel no início do domingo e disparou sirenes de ataque aéreo em seu aeroporto internacional, na mais recente reverberação da guerra de quase um ano em Gaza. Israel deu a entender que responderia militarmente.
Não houve relatos de vítimas ou danos maiores, mas a mídia israelense exibiu imagens mostrando pessoas correndo para abrigos no Aeroporto Internacional Ben Gurion. A autoridade do aeroporto disse que retomou as operações normais logo depois.
Um incêndio pôde ser visto em uma área rural do centro de Israel, e a mídia local mostrou imagens do que parecia ser um fragmento de um interceptador que caiu em uma escada rolante em uma estação de trem na cidade central de Modiin.
O exército de Israel disse que o míssil superfície-superfície foi interceptado pelo sistema de defesa de Israel, que atingiu e fragmentou o alvo, mas não o destruiu. Os militares disseram que o som das explosões na área veio de interceptadores.
Os Houthis dispararam repetidamente drones e mísseis contra Israel desde o início da guerra em Gaza, mas quase todos eles foram interceptados sobre o Mar Vermelho.
Em julho, um drone de fabricação iraniana lançado pelos Houthis atingiu Tel Aviv, matando uma pessoa e ferindo outras 10. Israel respondeu com uma onda de ataques aéreos em áreas do Iêmen controladas pelos Houthis, incluindo a cidade portuária de Hodeidah, um reduto Houthi.
O primeiro-ministro israelense, Benjamin Netanyahu, sugeriu uma resposta semelhante em comentários feitos em uma reunião do gabinete após o ataque de domingo.
“Os Houthis já deveriam saber que cobramos um preço alto por qualquer tentativa de nos prejudicar”, disse ele. “Qualquer um que precise de um lembrete está convidado a visitar o porto de Hodeidah.”
O Brigadeiro-General Yahya Saree, porta-voz militar dos Houthis, disse que eles dispararam um míssil balístico visando “um alvo militar” na área de Tel Aviv.
Os Houthis também atacaram repetidamente navios comerciais no Mar Vermelho, no que eles retratam como um bloqueio a Israel em apoio aos palestinos. A maioria dos navios visados não tem conexão com Israel.
A guerra em Gaza, que começou com o ataque terrorista do Hamas em 7 de outubro no sul de Israel, se espalhou pela região, com o Irã e grupos aliados atacando alvos israelenses e americanos e atraindo ataques retaliatórios de Israel e seus aliados ocidentais. No domingo, o exército israelense disse que havia uma “alta probabilidade” de que três reféns encontrados mortos meses atrás tenham sido mortos em um ataque aéreo israelense.
O exército anunciou as conclusões de sua investigação sobre as mortes do Cpl. Nik Beizer, Sgt. Ron Sherman e Elia Toledano. Ele disse que as investigações determinaram que os três provavelmente foram mortos em um ataque aéreo de novembro que também matou um terrorista sênior do Hamas, Ahmed Ghandour.
Todos os três reféns foram sequestrados no ataque terrorista do Hamas em 7 de outubro. Seus corpos foram recuperados em dezembro, mas a causa da morte só foi determinada recentemente.
Em seu relatório, o exército disse que havia uma “alta probabilidade” de que eles tivessem sido mortos no ataque, com base em onde os corpos foram recuperados, relatórios patológicos e outras informações.
