MIAMI GARDENS — Acho que o quarterback Skylar Thompson pode desempenhar o papel de titular temporário do Miami Dolphins.
Não digo isso simplesmente porque sou o cara que disse há um mês que ele é não estou preocupado com a situação do quarterback reserva dos Dolphins.
Digo que acho que Thompson pode fazer o trabalho porque confio nos treinadores e na administração dos Dolphins nessa questão.
Acredito que o técnico Mike McDaniel e o gerente geral Chris Grier não passariam por uma offseason inteira e um training camp inteiro, durante os quais tiveram uma grande batalha de quarterback reserva entre Thompson e Mike White, apenas para descobrir que Thompson é inadequado duas semanas depois do início da temporada.
Além disso, confio no que vi durante o treinamento.
Thompson, que melhorou desde a última vez que entrou em campo como titular em 2022, foi melhor que White.

Se Thompson é inadequado, a culpa é mais do treinador principal e da organização do que do indivíduo.

Eu sempre digo isso.
Quando as coisas dão errado, um jogador, ou grupo de jogadores, geralmente é o culpado.
Mas se a situação do quarterback reserva dos Dolphins der errado, a culpa é de McDaniel e da organização. Essa situação atual do quarterback reserva é um reflexo do julgamento e da previsão deles — ou da falta deles.
Eu escolho acreditar que os Dolphins fizeram a escolha certa em relação ao quarterback reserva e estão preparados para essa situação.
Mas vamos além dos meus pensamentos.
Há um problema maior aqui.
Não há desculpa para um time que prioriza o ataque, como os Dolphins, um time que depende muito de seu quarterback, ter um quarterback reserva inadequado.
Nenhuma desculpa. Nenhuma.
Como um treinador inteligente e visionário, e como uma organização inteligente e visionária, McDaniel precisa ter um “Plano Skylar Thompson”.
E tinha que ser preparado há semanas, ou até meses.
Olha, sabemos que Thompson não pode fazer as mesmas coisas que Tagovailoa faz.
Ninguém espera que Thompson faça as mesmas coisas que Tagovailoa faz.
Isso não é realista.
Dito isso, não consigo imaginar uma situação realista em que esse crime não funcione de forma eficaz sob o comando de Thompson.
Sejamos honestos, a principal função de Thompson é colocar a bola nas mãos do wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Depois disso, seu trabalho é colocar a bola nas mãos do wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
Foi assim que Tagovailoa teve sucesso.
Foi assim que McDaniel obteve sucesso.
É assim que o ataque dos Dolphins faz sucesso.
Entenda uma coisa: não estou de forma alguma menosprezando o que Tagovailoa conquistou, o que McDaniel conquistou ou o que esse ataque conquistou.
Estou falando em termos de linha de fundo. Thompson simplesmente tem que conseguir passar a bola para Hill e Waddle.
Se McDaniel não consegue encontrar maneiras de Thompson colocar a bola nas mãos de Hill e Waddle, por que Thompson está no time?
Se Thompson não consegue passar a bola para Hill e Waddle de forma eficaz, por que os Dolphins não têm um quarterback reserva que possa realizar a tarefa mais importante do time?
Sabemos que McDaniel é uma mente jovem e brilhante de treinador. Seu ataque é criativo e inovador.
Eu ficaria absolutamente surpreso se McDaniel não conseguisse criar um ataque que destacasse os pontos fortes de Thompson, escondesse suas fraquezas e lhe permitisse jogar bem no domingo em Seattle (2-0).
