CLEVELAND, Ohio – Quando Stephen Vogt foi contratado para ser o gerente dos Guardians, ele sabia que eles tinham um bom closer em Emmanuel Clase. Ele sabia porque ele enfrentaria Clase antes de se aposentar como jogador após a temporada de 2022.
O resto do bullpen era um mistério.
Ficou ainda mais misterioso quando o armador Trevor Stephan (cotovelo direito), James Karinchak (ombro direito) e o canhoto Sam Hentges abriram o ano na lista de lesionados. Stephen estava fora do ano com uma cirurgia de Tommy John, Karinchak ainda não lançou um único arremesso nas grandes ligas, enquanto Hentges está programado para uma cirurgia de fim de temporada no ombro esquerdo na quarta-feira, após fazer 25 aparições.
“Tínhamos Clase, mas perdemos Steph e Karinchak, aí estão vocês, sétimo e oitavo inning (caras)”, disse Vogt. “Então Hentges caiu.
“Nós realmente não sabíamos o que faríamos no final.”
Os Guardians, apesar dessa incerteza, montaram o melhor bullpen das grandes ligas.
O titular convertido Hunter Gaddis foi para o oitavo inning. O canhoto Tim Herrin e o destro Cade Smith também entraram na fila. Gaddis, Herrin e Smith começaram esta temporada como novatos.
O restante do pen foi preenchido por Nick Sandlin, Eli Morgan e Pedro Avila, juntamente com vários braços que pegaram o ônibus espacial entre a Classe AAA Columbus e Cleveland. Scott Barlow foi recentemente designado para a tarefa após fazer 63 aparições. Os braços mais novos pertencem aos novatos Andrew Walters e Eric Sabrowski.

- Smith: 6-1, 2,00, 71 jogos, uma defesa, 72 entradas, 98 strikeouts, 17 walks, 49 hits, média de rebatidas de 0,191 contra.
- Sandlin: 8-0, 3,71, 64 jogos, uma defesa, 53 1/3 innings, 64 strikeouts, 26 walks, 38 hits, média de rebatidas de 0,203 contra.
- Avila: 5-1, 3,47, 47 jogos, uma defesa, 70 entradas, 70 strikeouts, 27 walks, 64 hits, média de rebatidas de 0,243 contra.
A evolução da caneta do Cleveland foi um caso de conquista de um, conquista de todos.
“Colocamos Gaddy e os outros caras lá e dissemos: ‘Vamos ver como eles se desenvolvem, vamos ver em quais papéis eles se transformam’”, disse Vogt. “Usamos nosso bullpen da mesma forma o ano todo.
“Queremos colocar os caras em posição de ter sucesso. Seja no quinto inning, no sexto inning, no sétimo inning ou no oitavo inning. Quem pode nos tirar dos problemas? Quem pode tirar esse grupo de rebatedores.”
Vogt consultou os treinadores de arremessos, os receptores, Sandy Alomar e analistas.
“Todos nós juntamos nossas cabeças para ver quem pode fazer o quê?” disse Vogt. “Quem é capaz de quê. e colocamos esses caras em posição de ter sucesso – e eles fizeram isso.”
Os Guardians entraram na importante série da AL Central de segunda-feira contra os Twins com um bullpen que está liderando as grandes ligas com uma ERA de 2,68, 50 defesas, uma média de rebatidas de 0,203 e um WHIP de 1,05 (walks+hits dividido por nove entradas).
“Cada cara criou o que pode lidar”, disse Vogt. “E usamos todos os caras em todas as situações. Clase é realmente o único (com um papel definido). Ele tem o nono.
“Fora isso, o plano é diferente a cada noite.”
Smith foi o último arremessador a chegar ao bullpen. Em seu primeiro jogo, ele eliminou cinco Oakland A’s em duas entradas em 30 de março.
“Foi uma introdução muito boa”, disse Vogt.
A flexibilidade da caneta ajudou Vogt a navegar nas últimas entradas. Os Guardians lideram a MLB com 56 jogos de três ou mais entradas sem gols de alívio. Os Yankees estão em segundo com 46.
“Este grupo só quer conseguir outs”, disse Vogt. “Eles estão preparados para conseguir outs. Não importa qual seja a situação. Eu continuo falando sobre Brad Goldberg (treinador do bullpen). É a maneira como ele fala com eles. É a maneira como eles falam uns com os outros.
“Eles são um até. Eles não são individuais. Eles não se importam com quem pega a bola, eles só querem sair e apertar as mãos depois do jogo. Nós usamos todo mundo em todas as situações. Então, quando seu nome é chamado em uma situação em que você não arremessou, em uma ou duas semanas, você já fez isso antes.”
Nada tem tanto sucesso quanto o sucesso, mesmo quando começa como um mistério.
