Cancele aquele pedido em massa de suco de beterraba.
O time de basquete do San Diego State bebe religiosamente a mistura rica em nitrato nos dias que antecedem os jogos em alta altitude, acreditando que ela melhora o fornecimento de oxigênio aos músculos, o que se torna mais difícil para atletas do nível do mar que se aventuram nas Montanhas Rochosas. E o Mountain West tem seis escolas acima de 4.500 pés e duas (Força Aérea e Wyoming) acima de 7.000.
A mudança da SDSU para um Pac-12 reformado a partir de 2026-27, então, pode significar maiores receitas de televisão com futebol americano… e menos viagens para altitudes elevadas para seu principal programa de basquete.
Do jeito que as coisas estão agora, apenas um dos seis membros do Pac-12 — Colorado State a 5.025 pés — tem elevação considerada problemática. As outras cinco escolas de altitude Mountain West, até agora, foram deixadas para trás.
“Esses são lugares difíceis de jogar em altitude — Albuquerque, Air Force, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah State”, disse o técnico do Aztecs, Brian Dutcher. “Todo mundo conhece minha posição sobre altitude: é difícil jogar em altitude.”
Há outros benefícios. Provavelmente significa que não haverá um cronograma de conferência de 20 jogos com uma liga de nove ou 10 times, algo que o Mountain West de 11 times adotou para a próxima temporada após anos de resistência da SDSU, então tem mais flexibilidade para construir um currículo de Torneio da NCAA.
“O futebol impulsiona o ônibus quando você pensa em geração de receita, TV, todas essas coisas”, disse o diretor atlético da SDSU, John David Wicker. “Mas nosso programa de basquete masculino tem sido tão bem-sucedido quanto quase qualquer outro no país nos últimos 10, 15 anos. Era importante garantir que eles estivessem em um lugar onde pudessem ter sucesso continuamente.
“Acho que o basquete vai melhorar um pouco.”
O atual Six-Pac é estatisticamente superior ao atual Mountain West, e deve melhorar à medida que se expande. As regras de conformidade da NCAA exigem que o Pac-12 reconfigurado tenha pelo menos oito membros jogadores de futebol até 2026-27.
Fontes disseram que a meta é nove para o futebol acomodar um calendário de conferência de 8 jogos. Um candidato principal é Memphis, que regularmente está entre os melhores programas de basquete masculino de médio porte e teve uma média de 12.276 fãs na temporada passada no FedExForum de 17.796 assentos (e tem um considerável cofrinho NIL graças a uma doação de US$ 25 milhões da FedEx sediada em Memphis).
Fontes também sugeriram que o Pac-12 pode buscar um 10º membro não-futebolista. Essa é uma maneira tímida de dizer Gonzaga.
Os Bulldogs flertaram com a ideia de deixar a West Coast Conference várias vezes, primeiro com a Mountain West em 2018, antes de conseguir concessões financeiras e de cronograma para ficar, e mais recentemente com a Big East e a Big 12.
Oregon State e Washington State assinaram um acordo de dois anos para jogar basquete e outros esportes no WCC até que o novo Pac-12 tome forma. As linhas de comunicação estão abertas.
Perguntaram a Dutcher se ele faria lobby com o técnico de Gonzaga, Mark Few.
“Mark Few é muito inteligente”, disse Dutcher. “Ele fará o que for do melhor interesse da Gonzaga University. Se ele olhar para essa situação e gostar das outras peças que estamos adicionando e sentir que é a melhor situação para Gonzaga estar, então eles farão o movimento.
“Mas eu sei disso. Dois dos melhores programas da Costa Oeste são San Diego State e Gonzaga. Se entrarmos na mesma liga juntos, vai ser uma liga difícil.”

A classificação média anual na métrica Kenpom nas últimas cinco temporadas para um time da Mountain West é 120. Para os seis que compõem o novo Pac-12: 87.
Os sete times restantes de Mountain West estão com 1-7 no Torneio da NCAA desde 2020. Os seis no Pac-12: 12-11, incluindo a corrida da SDSU para o jogo do campeonato em 2023 e a aparição do Oregon State na Elite Eight em 2021. Quatro estavam no torneio na temporada passada.
Aqui está uma análise mais detalhada dos seis, com sua classificação final média no Kenpom nos últimos cinco anos:
Universidade Estadual da Flórida (19): A joia da coroa do basquete de Mountain West, com quatro participações consecutivas no Torneio da NCAA (e 11 das últimas 14) e viagens consecutivas para o Sweet 16. Teria sido cinco consecutivas se o torneio de 2020 não tivesse sido cancelado com os Aztecs em 30-2 e projetados como uma semente nº 2.
Estado de Boise (52): O técnico Leon Rice e sua equipe veterana transformaram os Broncos em competidores perenes, terminando em primeiro ou segundo no Mountain West e chegando ao Torneio da NCAA em cada uma das últimas três temporadas. A única coisa que eles não fizeram foi vencer quando chegaram lá.
Estado de Washington (71): Os Cougars acabaram com uma seca de 15 anos em torneios na temporada passada, vencendo 25 jogos e terminando em segundo atrás do Arizona no Pac-12 sob o comando do técnico Kyle Smith. Com um futuro incerto pela frente, Smith assumiu o cargo em Stanford e foi substituído por David Riley, do Eastern Washington.
Estado do Colorado (73): Os Rams venceram 20 ou mais jogos em quatro das seis temporadas sob o comando de Niko Medved, com destaque para as viagens à NCAA em 2022 e 2024. Na primavera passada, eles derrotaram a Virgínia por 67 a 42 no First Four antes de perder para o Texas. Como o único time de altitude, eles terão uma grande vantagem em casa na Moby Arena.
Estado de Oregon (146): Os Beavers tiveram quatro temporadas consecutivas no top 100 do Kenpom antes de desaparecerem nas últimas três, terminando em 12º, 11º e 12º no Pac-12 sob o comando do técnico Wayne Tinkle. Há uma rica história no basquete, no entanto, e o Gill Coliseum, com 9.301 lugares, pode ser um lugar intimidador quando cheio.
Estado de Fresno (160): Os Bulldogs chegaram ao torneio apenas uma vez desde que Jerry Tarkanian se aposentou em 2002, e o Save Mart Center, com 15.596 lugares, é um necrotério na maioria das noites. O Fresno State está entre os programas de basquete com menos recursos do Mountain West, tornando o Pac-12 uma batalha difícil para o novo técnico Vance Walberg sem investimento significativo.
“Veremos o que é”, disse Dutcher. “Ainda estamos a dois anos de distância. Veremos quem mais entra na liga. Pode ser melhor para nós. Mas no final do dia, não importa onde estamos. O que fizemos foi construir o San Diego State em um programa relevante.
“Poderíamos jogar em qualquer liga e continuaremos relevantes.”
