Um homem de 18 anos foi preso após um tiroteio na tarde de segunda-feira no centro de Minneapolis que feriu um garoto de 14 anos.
De acordo com uma declaração da polícia, os policiais ouviram tiros por volta das 4:22 da tarde e encontraram evidências de um tiroteio em um estacionamento perto da N. 5th Street e Hennepin Avenue. Poucos minutos depois, eles prenderam o suspeito em um beco atrás da delegacia First Precinct do departamento de polícia, 19 N. 4th St., e recuperaram uma arma.
Alguns minutos depois, a polícia do Metro Transit identificou a vítima de 14 anos na N. 8th Street e Hennepin Avenue, onde ele havia corrido e talvez tentado embarcar em um ônibus. Ele foi levado para HCMC com um ferimento que aparentemente não era fatal.
Investigadores da polícia estavam trabalhando para estabelecer o que levou ao tiroteio. O suspeito foi autuado na Cadeia do Condado de Hennepin pelo tiroteio e mandados não relacionados.
“Este é mais um exemplo claro do problema muito real da violência armada que temos nesta cidade”, disse o chefe de polícia Brian O’Hara na declaração. “O MPD continuará seus esforços focados para erradicar este problema que tem resultados tão trágicos.”
A violência armada aumentou em Minneapolis e em todo o país em 2020 e 2021, mas diminuiu desde então. Criminologistas atribuíram o aumento aos efeitos da pandemia de COVID-19, às consequências do assassinato de George Floyd pela polícia e ao aumento do porte de armas.
