NOVA YORK (AP) — Sean “Diddy” Combs foi preso na noite de segunda-feira em Nova York, onde enfrenta uma acusação criminal selada, anunciaram os promotores na noite de segunda-feira.
Os detalhes das acusações não foram anunciados imediatamente pelos promotores, mas o magnata do hip-hop enfrentou uma série de acusações de mulheres nos últimos meses que o acusaram de agressão sexual.
O procurador dos EUA em Manhattan, Damian Williams, disse em uma declaração que agentes federais prenderam Combs. “Esperamos mover para revelar a acusação pela manhã e teremos mais a dizer naquele momento.”
O advogado de Combs, Marc Agnifilo, emitiu uma declaração dizendo: “Estamos decepcionados com a decisão de prosseguir com o que acreditamos ser um processo injusto contra o Sr. Combs pelo Ministério Público dos EUA.”
Ele acrescentou que Combs foi a Nova York na semana passada, prevendo as acusações.
“Ele é uma pessoa imperfeita, mas não é um criminoso”, disse Agnifilo.
Combs foi preso no saguão de um hotel em Manhattan e está sob custódia federal, disse uma pessoa familiarizada com a prisão que falou com a Associated Press sob condição de anonimato porque não estava autorizada a falar publicamente.
As acusações criminais são uma grande, mas não inesperada, punição a um dos produtores mais proeminentes e nomes mais famosos da história do hip-hop.
A investigação federal sobre Combs, de 58 anos, foi revelada quando agentes do Departamento de Investigações de Segurança Interna cumpriram mandados de busca simultâneos e invadiram as mansões de Combs em Los Angeles e Miami em 25 de março.
Seu advogado de defesa, Aaron Dyer, no dia seguinte às batidas, as chamou de “um uso grosseiro de força de nível militar”, disse que as alegações eram “sem mérito” e disse que Combs era “inocente e continuará lutando” para limpar seu nome.
Combs, então conhecido como Puff Daddy, estava no centro das batalhas do hip-hop da Costa Leste e da Costa Oeste dos anos 1990 como parceiro e produtor do Notorious BIG, que foi baleado e morto em 1997. Mas, como muitos dos que sobreviveram à época, sua imagem pública suavizou-se com a idade, transformando-se em um anfitrião gentil de festas em Hollywood e nos Hamptons, um empresário antenado na moda e um pai amoroso que mimava seus filhos, alguns dos quais perderam a mãe em 2018.
Mas uma imagem diferente começou a surgir em novembro, quando sua antiga protegida e namorada, a cantora de R&B Cassie, se tornou a primeira de várias pessoas a processá-lo por abuso sexual com histórias de um fluxo constante de profissionais do sexo em ambientes movidos a drogas, onde alguns dos envolvidos foram coagidos ou persuadidos a fazer sexo.
Em seu processo de novembro, Cassie alegou anos de abuso, incluindo espancamentos e estupro. Seu processo também alegou que Combs se envolveu em tráfico sexual ao “exigir que ela se envolvesse em atos sexuais forçados em múltiplas jurisdições” e ao se envolver em “abrigar e transportar a Autora para fins de sexo induzido por força, fraude ou coerção”.
Ele também disse que a obrigou a ajudá-lo a traficar profissionais do sexo com quem Combs forçaria Cassie a fazer sexo enquanto ele filmava.
O processo foi resolvido no dia seguinte, mas suas reverberações durariam muito mais. Combs perdeu aliados, apoiadores e aqueles que reservavam o julgamento quando a CNN exibiu em maio um vídeo vazado dele socando Cassie, chutando-a e jogando-a no chão no corredor de um hotel.
No dia seguinte, em seu primeiro reconhecimento real de irregularidade desde que a onda de alegações começou, Combs postou um vídeo nas redes sociais se desculpando, dizendo “Fiquei enojado quando fiz isso” e “Estou enojado agora”. O processo de Cassie foi seguido por pelo menos meia dúzia de outros nos meses seguintes.
Em fevereiro, um produtor musical entrou com uma ação judicial alegando que Combs o coagiu a procurar prostitutas e o pressionou a fazer sexo com elas.
Outra acusadora de Combs foi uma mulher que disse que o produtor de rap a estuprou há duas décadas, quando ela tinha 17 anos.
Outra mulher que entrou com uma ação judicial, April Lampos, disse que era uma estudante universitária em 1994 quando conheceu Combs e uma série de “encontros sexuais aterrorizantes” com Combs e pessoas ao seu redor começaram e duraram anos.
Combs e seus advogados negaram quase todas as alegações dos processos.
Embora as autoridades não tenham dito publicamente que os processos desencadearam a investigação criminal, Dyer disse quando os mandados foram cumpridos que o caso foi baseado em “acusações infundadas feitas em processos civis”.
A AP normalmente não nomeia pessoas que dizem ter sofrido abuso sexual, a menos que elas se apresentem publicamente, como fizeram Cassie e Lampros.
Como fundador da Bad Boy Records, Combs se tornou um dos produtores e executivos de hip-hop mais influentes das últimas três décadas. Junto com Notorious BIG, ele trabalhou com uma série de artistas de primeira linha, incluindo Mary J. Blige, Usher, Lil Kim, Faith Evans e 112.
O papel de Combs em seus negócios além da música — incluindo lucrativas marcas próprias de bebidas alcoólicas, uma empresa de mídia e a linha de moda Sean John — sofreu grandes golpes quando as alegações surgiram.
As consequências foram ainda maiores quando o vídeo vazado da surra veio à tona. A Universidade Howard cortou relações com ele, e ele devolveu sua chave para a cidade de Nova York a pedido do prefeito.
