A ascensão dos smartphones, a queda da confiança nas instituições nacionais, mais diversidade e uma reviravolta de 180 graus no sentimento público em relação ao casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo estão entre as grandes mudanças na sociedade americana nos últimos 20 anos.
O Pew Research Center publicou um ensaio que examina algumas dessas mudanças de atitude como uma das maneiras pelas quais o centro de estudos apartidário está comemorando seu 20º aniversário.
“Acho que, principalmente na temporada eleitoral, quando podemos ficar tão obcecados com a forma como a opinião pública muda de semana para semana, é importante dar uma olhada no escopo maior das coisas”, disse a vice-presidente executiva do Pew Research Center, Claudia Deane.
Mudanças de visão sobre gênero e sexualidade estão entre as maiores mudanças de 2004 até agora.
Em uma pesquisa do Pew Research Center de 2004, 60% dos americanos se opunham ao casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo. Em 2023, 63% dos americanos apoiavam o casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo.
“Na minha carreira como especialista em opinião pública, as mudanças de visão sobre o casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo nos últimos 20 anos estão entre as mais dramáticas que já vi”, disse Deane. “A opinião literalmente se inverteu durante esse período.”
Da mesma forma, as opiniões sobre a legalização da maconha mudaram drasticamente.
Apenas um terço dos adultos americanos disseram que a maconha deveria ser legalizada há 20 anos. No ano passado, o apoio havia subido para 70%.
Mais americanos agora são “religiosamente não afiliados”, de acordo com o Pew Research Center. Eles estão atrás dos protestantes, que compõem 41% dos adultos americanos, mas compõem uma parcela maior da população do que os católicos (20%) e todas as outras religiões (8%).
A diversidade racial e étnica aumentou nos EUA nas últimas décadas.
As populações asiáticas, hispânicas e negras cresceram em taxas mais rápidas do que a população branca entre 2004 e 2022, de acordo com o Pew Research Center. A parcela de americanos que são brancos caiu de 68% em 2004 para 59% em 2022.
A ascensão da internet, dos smartphones e das mídias sociais tem sido uma grande parte das mudanças que vimos nos últimos 20 anos.
Pouco mais de 60% dos adultos americanos usaram a internet em 2004, e apenas 65% tinham um celular — não um smartphone especificamente. Hoje, mais de 90% estão online e têm um smartphone.
Mas uma parcela crescente de americanos vê tanto o partido Republicano quanto o Democrata como mais desfavoráveis do que favoráveis. Vxiews do Congresso e da Suprema Corte se tornaram mais negativos nos últimos 20 anos, de acordo com o Pew Research Center.
Vinte anos atrás, cerca de um terço dos americanos disseram que confiavam no governo federal para fazer o que é certo quase sempre ou na maioria das vezes. Na primavera passada, apenas 22% disseram o mesmo.
Deane disse que os pesquisadores podem prever cada vez mais o que os americanos vão pensar de uma política simplesmente pedindo a identificação do partido. Mas nem sempre foi assim, ela disse.
Deane disse que o cenário tecnológico em rápida mudança pode definir a próxima era.
“Ainda estamos tentando entender como as pessoas estão usando as mídias sociais, o que estão aprendendo… e como isso as está impactando”, disse ela. “Trabalhamos muito com adolescentes. Como se ainda houvesse muito que não soubéssemos — e, no entanto, a IA já está aqui. Então, ainda não descobrimos como as pessoas estão vivenciando e sendo mudadas por essa tecnologia antes de termos outra logo atrás. Então, acho que os próximos 20 anos podem ser sobre entender isso.”
