O primeiro quarto foi um vai e vem de corridas. Com Collier — que teve oito pontos no primeiro quarto — começando bem, o Lynx saltou para uma liderança inicial de 9-2. O Lynx ainda liderava por quatro quando Connecticut — aproveitando as bandejas perdidas e turnovers do Lynx — marcou nove pontos consecutivos para abrir 20-15 na bandeja de Bonner após um turnover com 1½ minutos restantes no quarto. Mas o Lynx terminou o quarto 7-2, com McBride acertando uma de três no estouro do quarto para mandar o jogo para o segundo quarto empatado em 22-22.
A sequência chegou a 11-2 no início do segundo quarto, com a cesta de Hines-Allen colocando o Lynx em vantagem de quatro.
As duas equipes alternaram o jogo até que, com o jogo empatado em 36 após a terceira cesta de três pontos de Marina Mabrey, o Lynx terminou o tempo em 6-1, abrindo 42-37.
Ambas as equipes foram eficientes no primeiro tempo, com o Sun arremessando melhor que 48% e o Lynx arremessando 50%. Collier teve 14 pontos e Williams teve sete assistências no intervalo. O Lynx tinha uma vantagem de 12 pontos no final do quarto, mas o Sun conseguiu transformar um turnover do Lynx em uma cesta de três pontos, reduzindo a vantagem do Lynx para um dígito.
