A deputada americana Yadira Caraveo criticou duramente seu oponente republicano na terça-feira, dizendo que Gabe Evans não havia renunciado adequadamente às postagens recentemente divulgadas nas redes sociais por seu agora ex-diretor político, que eram antissemitas e promoviam violência política.
“Ele não disse se discorda de suas postagens ofensivas ou se se manifestou contra o antissemitismo”, disse Caraveo, um democrata, durante uma breve entrevista coletiva online. “Vamos ser claros: ódio e antissemitismo não têm lugar em nossa sociedade. Devemos enfrentar todas as formas de intolerância, onde e quando as virmos.”
Na terça-feira, Evans, um representante estadual, condenou diretamente os comentários de sua ex-diretora política, Jessica Spindle, em um e-mail ao The Denver Post.
“Gabe rejeita totalmente o material ofensivo contido nessas postagens de mídia social”, escreveu o porta-voz da campanha Alan Philp. “É por isso que ele agiu imediatamente ao saber delas.”
As postagens de Spindle foram expostas em uma história na semana passada pelo Colorado Times Recorder. O canal online mostrou capturas de tela das postagens de Spindle em sites de mídia social, incluindo o Facebook, que eram antissemitas, junto com uma em que ela escreveu “por favor, atire nela” — em referência à ex-presidente da Câmara Nancy Pelosi, uma democrata.
Em 2019, Spindle elogiou uma bandeira mashup combinando a bandeira dos Estados Unidos, a bandeira “Don’t Tread on Me” e a bandeira confederada. Ela também postou favoravelmente sobre o movimento QAnon, uma teoria da conspiração que alega que Donald Trump está lutando contra um culto secreto e satânico de líderes mundiais e celebridades com a intenção de dominar o mundo.
As postagens de Spindle datam em grande parte de 2019 a 2021, antes do Times Recorder dizer que ela trabalhou pela primeira vez com Evans, ajudando-o a vencer a eleição para a Câmara estadual em 2022. Mas sua história disse que Spindle postou uma imagem antissemita em junho.
A conta de Spindle no Facebook foi tornada privada e sua conta na plataforma social X parece ter sido desativada.
A campanha de Evans disse que Spindle foi demitida na semana passada “depois que uma série de comentários inapropriados que ela fez nas redes sociais foram trazidos à nossa atenção”.
Philp não respondeu a uma pergunta sobre como Spindle havia sido examinada para o cargo de diretora política da campanha ou como Evans poderia não ter conhecimento de suas postagens nas redes sociais. Spindle, que atua no Conselho de Educação do Distrito Escolar Weld RE-9, sediado em Fort Lupton, não retornou um pedido de comentário por e-mail.
O congressista democrata de Illinois Brad Schneider, que é judeu, juntou-se a Caraveo na ligação de terça-feira. Ele chamou Evans de “extremo” e o acusou de “não ficar com o povo judeu” contra o ódio.
A campanha de Evans tentou virar o jogo contra Caraveo, uma representante novata, criticando seu voto negativo em novembro passado em um projeto de lei que teria fornecido US$ 14,3 bilhões a Israel em sua luta contra o Hamas. Na época de seu voto, Caraveo disse que se opunha ao projeto de lei porque os republicanos o projetaram para ser financiado retirando dinheiro do Internal Revenue Service. Toda a delegação democrata do Congresso do Colorado votou contra o projeto de lei.
A campanha de Evans também disse que Caraveo não foi suficientemente vocal nas críticas aos protestos universitários contra Israel na primavera passada, que às vezes se transformaram no que alguns estudantes judeus do Colorado perceberam como demonstrações de antissemitismo.
O 8º Distrito Congressional é considerado uma das disputas mais acirradas pela Câmara no país na eleição de novembro e se destaca como o distrito mais uniformemente dividido do Colorado por filiação de eleitores. O distrito cobre os subúrbios do norte de Denver no Condado de Adams e se estende ao norte até Greeley e em uma pequena fatia do Condado de Larimer.
