A tão esperada vingança de 2 a 0 do Severna Park contra o South River ocorreu ao longo de 60 minutos de uma briga implacável e sem gols.
Isto é, até que o júnior dos Falcons, Aiden Min, se afastou. Ele sentiu o South River atrás de seus calcanhares, mas ele continuou com a bola, acelerando o gramado escorregadio pela chuva em direção ao eventual gol.
“Foi realmente inesperado”, admitiu Min, que logo foi seguido por Garrett Moden na pontuação. “Não conseguimos fazer muitos passes para o meio. No segundo tempo, realmente conversamos sobre isso e conseguimos nosso gol. Nós merecemos.”
Para o técnico do Falcons, Ryan Parisi, a disputa de terça-feira com o South River “foi apenas mais um jogo”. Na verdade, ambos os times formaram figuras-chave dos confrontos históricos um do outro — temporada regular, campeonato do condado e playoffs. Mas para aqueles que vestiram as cores do Severna Park e estavam lá no outono passado, a vitória certamente significou algo. O South River os fechou em seu próprio campo a caminho de ganhar um título estadual.
“Não estávamos prontos naquela época. Para este, falamos sobre isso a semana inteira”, disse Moden.
Depois que um gol marcou o placar, os Seahawks se esforçaram para responder. Se esperavam tirar vantagem do alívio do Severna Park para marcar, ficaram profundamente decepcionados.
Se alguma coisa, o quebra-gelo animou ainda mais o Severna Park. Os Seahawks foram abordados como se fosse futebol americano, não europeu. Os Seahawks dispararam para a rede dos Falcons, lançando três chutes para o goleiro Charlie Samples, incluindo um escorregadio que ele teve que mergulhar duas vezes. O júnior manteve o placar unilateral.
“A cada bola 50-50, estamos lá”, disse Moden. “Todo mundo está gritando. Todo mundo na lateral está animado.”
Min e Stephen Bacho colocaram o goleiro do South River, Ian Wallace, sob cerco. Ele nem estava preparado para Moden.
O escanteio dos Falcons que alimentou o segundo gol reconhecidamente foi mais longe do que eles queriam. South River quase o levou para fora dos limites.
Moden agarrou-se ao poste de trás, esperando. O meio-campista Jacob Broadwater recuperou-se pouco antes da bola passar de raspão e atirou-a de volta para seu companheiro de equipe.
“Felizmente eu estava lá para guardá-lo”, disse Moden.
Tanto o South River quanto o Severna Park perderam os maiores pontuadores e defensores para a formatura e ambos descobriram, durante a primeira semana e mais da temporada, que ainda há perguntas a serem respondidas, papéis a serem definidos, problemas a serem ajustados. Essa incerteza se desenrolou com cada arremesso errante e toque perdido durante o primeiro tempo e bem no segundo.
“Mas, obviamente, jogar contra um time como o South River é uma partida de gaiola”, disse Parisi. “Conforme o jogo avança, você descobre. O primeiro tempo é um pouco lento, agitado, feio. No segundo tempo, nós desaceleramos as coisas. E, claro, o gol ajuda.”
Meninas do Severna Park navegam para vitória de 4-1
As meninas do Falcons precisavam de um tipo diferente de motivação além dos gols para finalmente conquistar o triunfo por 4 a 1.
Quando a aluna do segundo ano Izzy Burleson se libertou, cruzou para a área e perdeu sua sombra no South River por apenas um segundo, tempo suficiente para acertar o chute no canto mais distante da rede, ela deu um tom que o Severna Park pretendia manter por muito mais tempo do que manteve.
O time dos Falcons que brilhou para um recorde invicto e título estadual 3A no outono passado retornou em grande parte, com exceções notáveis na defesa. Aqueles que permaneceram aprenderam rapidamente na semana passada que não poderiam repetir os eventos do ano passado, barra por barra.
Dificilmente algum time poderia marcar no Severna Park em 2023, muito menos primeiro. No entanto, foi exatamente isso que Arundel fez, em um pênalti. E então, na terça-feira, assim que os Falcons assumiram uma liderança de 1-0, South River reagiu da mesma forma.
A veterana do Seahawks, Colleen Creswell, desafiou por uma bola e sentiu um Falcon colidir com ela. Suas companheiras de equipe gritaram apoio atrás dela. Creswell se acomodou; no apito, ela cambaleou para frente e a goleira Lily Diedrich se moveu com ela. O chute pareceu ganhar vida. Mesmo quando Diedrich parecia fazer a parada, a bola mudou atrás dela e atingiu a rede.
A comemoração de South River aconteceu — mas não por muito tempo.
A júnior dos Falcons, Addison Murphy, se soltou da multidão e depositou seu gol momentos depois do South River para recuperar a liderança. Um apito de retomada de jogo e posse simples depois, a júnior Emma Lawrence fez o mesmo para fazer 3-1.
“Eles não estão com medo. Se ficarem para trás, eles vão encarar o desafio”, disse o técnico do Falcons, Rick Stimpson.
O segundo tempo se arrastou ao som da bola batendo para frente e para trás. O placar permaneceu inalterado em grande parte devido às goleiras, Diedrich e Arianna Bodycomb, do South River, que jogava todo o seu corpo para uma defesa, ficava de pé e pulava novamente contra os ataques implacáveis do Severna Park.
“Eles estavam segurando uma linha alta, e somos um time acostumado a jogar bolas curtas e rápidas saindo da defesa, então foi meio difícil”, disse o zagueiro júnior Emerson Scott. “Eles estavam nos invadindo e foi mais fácil mandar a bola por cima.”
Mas Bodycomb não conseguiu deter todos eles.
Mais da metade do tempo, um escanteio do Severna Park voou para a briga. A maioria foi para a cabeçada, mas Scott se manteve no chão e marcou o quarto gol a uns bons 20 metros do canto.
O time do Severna Park do ano passado varreu os Seahawks em três jogos. Scott reconheceu o time do ano passado por seus pontos fortes. Mas é uma prova do programa, ela disse, que o time deste ano é tão bom quanto é, também.
“Acho que todas se saíram bem hoje. As meninas que começaram na defesa fizeram um ótimo trabalho; aquelas que saíram do banco continuaram com esse ímpeto”, disse Stimpson. “Limitamos as opções delas. Quer dizer, é um trabalho em andamento, mas eu realmente gosto da forma como começamos a temporada.”
