TAMPA — Se a vitória de domingo em Detroit serve de sinal, Baker Mayfield fez uma carreira muito boa liderando seus times ao triunfo pela pura força de vontade.
As Vipers do ensino fundamental e médio da Space Coast podem atestar em primeira mão essa força — e sua natureza filantrópica.
Conte-os como o mais novo time a ser elevado pelo coração de Mayfield. A fundação sem fins lucrativos administrada pelo quarterback dos Bucs e sua esposa, Emily, recentemente fez uma doação de US$ 17.900 aos Vipers para pagar por novos capacetes e protetores. O time respondeu com um vídeo de quatro minutos no qual o técnico dos Vipers, Jake Owens, e vários jogadores agradeceram ao casal.
“Está difícil encontrar dinheiro agora, e tivemos um pai que entrou em contato com a fundação Baker and Emily para possivelmente apoiar nosso time de futebol aqui na Space Coast”, disse Owens no vídeo. “E eles foram generosos o suficiente para entrar em contato conosco e nos dizer que iriam patrocinar o Space Coast Vipers este ano.
“Então, muito obrigado a vocês. Em nome dos Vipers, estamos ansiosos para deixar vocês orgulhosos este ano e sair e levar tudo isso para o campo de futebol.”
A doação acontece na esteira do primeiro evento da fundação, um torneio e jantar no Topgolf Tampa para beneficiar a alfabetização infantil e “nivelar o campo de jogo” para jovens da área auxiliados pela Early Learning Coalition do Condado de Hillsborough.
“Um dos nossos maiores lemas é nivelar o campo de jogo para todos”, disse Mayfield na quarta-feira. “E ouvir que as crianças não tiveram a chance de jogar futebol, um jogo pelo qual sou tão apaixonado, apenas dar essa oportunidade é algo que não foi realmente uma hesitação.”
Os Vipers, com 1-8 na temporada passada, estão com 3-2 este ano, com uma das derrotas ocorrendo na prorrogação.
“Este jogo ensina muito sobre a vida, os desafios, a adversidade, a responsabilidade pelo tempo, a prestação de contas, tudo isso”, disse Mayfield. “Então, só de poder fornecer equipamento para que os caras tenham essa oportunidade, é uma ótima sensação.”
