Dois dos maiores alojamentos universitários dos EUA foram inaugurados na quarta-feira na UC San Diego, que está lutando para absorver um crescimento histórico nas matrículas em uma região onde moradias acessíveis fora do campus são escassas.
Os alunos fizeram fila cedo para se mudar para Pepper Canyon West, que tem uma torre de 23 andares e outra de 22 andares. A maior agora está empatada com os apartamentos Palisade UTC Lux como o edifício mais alto na área ao redor.
Existem poucos alojamentos tão altos em universidades americanas, e nenhum se compara ao dormitório de 34 andares que a Pace University abriu em Nova York há nove anos.
O novo complexo de US$ 365 milhões da UCSD abrigará 1.310 alunos transferidos de universidades superiores, muitos dos quais teriam que competir com todos, de engenheiros a enfermeiros, para encontrar uma vaga na movimentada La Jolla ou University City.
“Não estamos apenas atendendo a uma demanda crítica por moradia, mas também criando uma oportunidade única para os alunos construírem conexões duradouras em um lugar lindo e inspirador”, disse o chanceler Pradeep Khosla ao The San Diego Union-Tribune em uma declaração.
Os estudantes que moram no Pepper Canyon West pagarão US$ 1.350 por mês de aluguel para morar nos apartamentos compartilhados do alojamento.
O aluguel médio de um apartamento na área de La Jolla-UTC é de US$ 3.320 por mês, de acordo com a CoStar, uma empresa imobiliária.
Pepper Canyon West ajudará a permitir que a UCSD abrigue um recorde de 22.000 alunos durante o trimestre de outono, que começa na segunda-feira. Em todo o país, apenas a UCLA, que pode acomodar 24.000, abriga mais alunos.
A UCSD agora tem quatro dormitórios que variam de 16 a 23 andares de altura, e está construindo torres individuais de 18 e 16 andares como parte de outra vila do campus. Essas duas últimas torres farão parte de um complexo que abrigará 2.400 alunos quando for inaugurado no próximo outono.
Mas isso não será o fim.
Khosla obteve permissão do Conselho de Regentes da UC no início deste ano para criar uma vila para 6.000 estudantes, uma das maiores propostas desse tipo já feitas nos EUA. Provavelmente seria composta por cinco arranha-céus.
A UCSD costumava parecer e se sentir mais como uma cidade litorânea tranquila. Mas a matrícula aumentou em cerca de 13.000 na última década, e os dormitórios imponentes que isso gerou estão tornando o campus mais parecido com uma cidade.
A expectativa é que as matrículas cheguem perto de 43.000 quando o trimestre de outono começar na segunda-feira, e a projeção é que cheguem a 50.000 em cerca de uma década.
Muitos dos estudantes que se mudaram para Pepper Canyon na quarta-feira ficaram entusiasmados por terem moradia no campus perto do bonde, um anfiteatro ao ar livre e o sindicato estudantil, com grandes janelas voltadas para o leste e oeste.
“Se tivéssemos tentado encontrar um lugar fora do campus que fosse similarmente localizado, teríamos quebrado um pouco o banco para viver lá”, disse a estudante Isha Khirwadkar. “Eu sei que alguns estudantes têm algumas queixas sobre o charme do campus estar perdido. Mas eu acho que é o que você faz dele.”
Ela estava parada não muito longe de Damilola Sule, uma atacante do time de basquete feminino. Sule dividirá uma suíte com outras cinco jogadoras.
“Podemos construir uma comunidade fora do basquete”, disse Sule. “Deve ser bem legal.”
Perto dali, uma terceira estudante, Jenna Layla, estava tirando seus pertences do banco de trás de um carro.
“Isso parece irreal”, ela disse. “Passávamos por esse prédio todos os dias e os víamos construí-lo. Agora, está pronto. Estou tão animada. Tenho uma bela vista para admirar. Acho que isso vai me motivar a fazer meu trabalho.”
