O coordenador defensivo dos Ravens, Zach Orr, está certo quando diz que o tom do discurso em torno das falhas de seu grupo seria muito diferente se eles estivessem 1-1 ou 2-0. Mas não estão. Eles não venceram, com erros defensivos suficientes para levantar sobrancelhas sobre a divergência da ascendência do ano passado.
“Neste momento”, disse Orr, “não somos o time de futebol, e não somos a defesa, que gostaríamos de ser”.
Roquan Smith, Nnamdi Madubuike e Kyle Hamilton eram todos pilares da defesa de elite dos Ravens há um ano, um grupo que liderou a NFL em pontos permitidos (16,5), sacks (60) e takeaways (31). Em duas semanas, eles cederam o quinto maior número de pontos e 13 times têm mais takeaways.
As estrelas de Baltimore não são estrelas — em uma pequena amostra de dois jogos — e essa defesa só pode ir até onde o monstro de três cabeças os levar.
“Tem que ser melhor, em poucas palavras”, Smith disse ao The Baltimore Sun. “Eu diria que é cada pessoa se olhando no espelho e fazendo seu trabalho da melhor forma possível e não permitindo erros em momentos críticos.
“Quando você elimina essas coisas, estamos jogando muito bem. Porque 85-90% das jogadas estamos fazendo bem, mas então são aqueles outros 10%. Nesta liga, 10% é muito.”
Cada um dos dois primeiros jogos de Baltimore se resumiu a esses 10%. Uma tarefa perdida aqui, uma penalidade ali. Orr falou na quarta-feira sobre o quanto esses caras se orgulham de ajudar a virar a temporada.
Hamilton criticou a si mesmo após a derrota na abertura da temporada para o Kansas City Chiefs, dizendo: “não jogamos nosso melhor futebol — especialmente eu, pessoalmente — acho que não joguei nada bem”.
A jogada que ele mais queria de volta era uma falta de 35 jardas para Xavier Worthy.
Baltimore estava perdendo por um field goal nos minutos iniciais do quarto período. Hamilton deveria cobrir por cima, mas se alinhou mais perto da linha de scrimmage antes do snap, deixando a escolha do draft de primeira rodada com a corrida de 40 jardas mais rápida da NFL descoberta pela linha lateral para um touchdown.
“A culpa foi minha, 100%”, disse ele após um erro que deixou seu time para baixo.
Hamilton surgiu no ano passado como um safety All-Pro em sua segunda temporada. Foi por volta dessa época no ano passado, na Semana 3 contra o Indianapolis Colts, que ele teve sua verdadeira festa de debutante com três sacks no primeiro tempo, um recorde da NFL para um defensive back.
Entre as derrotas para o Chiefs e o Las Vegas Raiders, Hamilton está entre os cinco primeiros em pass rush e defesa de corrida, de acordo com o Pro Football Focus. Ele também está em 65º lugar entre 77 safeties em cobertura.
Tanto Madubuike quanto Smith ganharam dias de pagamento pesados por quão integrais eles foram para o sucesso do ano passado. Madubuike registrou 13 sacks, o recorde da carreira — dobrando seu total de 2022 — e assinou por quatro anos, US$ 98 milhões nesta offseason. Smith foi de longe o líder de tackles deles com 158, o sexto maior número na NFL. Ele assinou por cinco anos, US$ 100 milhões em janeiro.
Ambos poderiam muito bem chegar ao fim da temporada regular tendo postado números semelhantes. Isso simplesmente não se mostrou nessas duas derrotas dos Ravens.
Madubuike tem apenas um quarterback hit e uma pressa de quarterback em cada derrota. No ano passado, ele se viu mais frequentemente invadindo o backfield e interrompendo o passador, como suas cinco pressas tanto na rodada divisional da AFC quanto no jogo do campeonato da conferência.
O linebacker externo Odafe Oweh disse que os pass rushers — assim como o resto do time — têm bagunçado as pequenas coisas. “Executando o blitz direito, apenas fazendo nosso trabalho, pequenos erros”, ele disse. “Muitas dessas perdas são feridas autoinfligidas.”
Assim como Madubuike, Smith ainda não jogou no nível que estava exibindo no ano passado. Em dois jogos, a PFF o classifica em 47,1, tornando-o, de 77 linebackers, o 67º mais produtivo.
A produção de Smith, seu contrato e sua habilidade de agitar um grupo pré-jogo o colocam em uma longa linhagem de defensores dos Ravens que definem a organização. Dois jogos não diminuem essa trajetória. Mas ele assume parte do ônus de endireitar o navio do pior começo de Baltimore desde 2015.
“Não é só uma pessoa”, disse Smith. “É sobre ecoar por toda parte e todos estarem na mesma página. … E começa comigo me certificando de que todos estejam em sintonia com cada verificação que temos. Faz parte do meu trabalho e tenho orgulho disso. Temos que ser melhores nisso.”
A campanha de empate dos Raiders no quarto período é um bom exemplo.
No segundo e 5 da linha de 40 jardas dos Ravens, Minshew encontrou o tight end novato Brock Bowers em terra de ninguém à sua direita para um primeiro down. Duas jogadas depois, o wide receiver Davante Adams deixou cair um passe pelo meio sem um defensor em um raio de 10 jardas dele.
“Às vezes é uma coisa um-contra-um onde eles fazem uma boa jogada… Há outras jogadas onde não estamos — não jogamos tão bem quanto poderíamos”, disse o técnico John Harbaugh. “Não estamos em posição, [or] não vemos da mesma forma, [or] reagimos um pouco tarde.”
Todos esses pequenos erros, como Orr disse, significam menos se os Ravens não estiverem 0-2. Até que eles ganhem um jogo junto com uma saída defensiva dominante, os holofotes permanecerão no trio dos melhores jogadores defensivos do time.
